Financial Aid

  • You may have been awarded a grant-in-aid (frequently called a "scholarship") because of your athletics ability. That aid may range from a small stipend to a full grant covering tuition, board, room, and any other required fees.
  • It is important to remember that all athletic grants made by Davidson College are for one year only. The athletic grant may be renewed from year to year. Notification of renewal or non-renewal must be made in writing before July 1 of each year. The notification shall come from the Financial Aid Office.
  • Athletic grants cannot be canceled or reduced during the academic year unless you render yourself ineligible for competition or are guilty of serious misconduct or voluntarily withdraw (quit) from the sport. Further, athletic grants may not be increased during the year.

Employment

Passage of Proposal 98-9, which was effective on August 1, 1998, allows student-athletes to earn legitimate income on or off campus during the academic year provided such income in combination with financial aid does not exceed a full grant-in-aid plus $2000. To qualify for this the following must be true:

1. The student has spent one academic year in residence at Davidson College (must be at least a sophomore).

2. The student-athlete is eligible academically to compete for the institution.

Further, before the employment begins, the student-athlete and the employer must sign a written statement, which specifies the following:

  • The student-athlete may not receive any remuneration for the value or utility that the student-athlete may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal following he or she has obtained because of athletics ability.
  • The student-athlete is to be compensated only for work actually performed, and
  • The student-athlete is to be compensated at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services.

This form may be picked up in the Compliance Office, Baker Sports Complex.

Extra Benefit – An extra benefit is any special gift or arrangement provided by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletics interest to a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend that is not available to the general student body of the institution.

You share the responsibility of making sure that you are not the recipient of any of these benefits.

When in doubt about accepting any benefit, you should consult your coach or the Compliance Director.
