Medical Facilities Directions
The Davidson College Sports Medicine facilities are among the best in the region. Head athletic trainer Beth Hayford (Wingate '93) oversees Davidson's five other full-time, certified and licensed athletic trainers to cover the school's 21 intercollegiate sports.
In the training room, there are many of the modern, technological machines that aid in the recovery from injuries, including ultrasound and electric stimulation. There are also three whirlpool tubs, a hydrocollator and a paraffin bath. For rehabilitation, there is Nautilus equipment as well as several stationary bicycles, a treadmill, a shuttle and many injury-specific machines.
Dr. Don D'Alessandro of OrthoCarolina in Charlotte serves as Davidson's team orthopaedic physician. From 1994 to 2001, he served as the first team physician for the Carolina Panthers. Today, he also serves as chief of Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center.
Dr. Karl 'Skip' Barkley of University Family Physicians serves as the college's team general practitioner. Barkley, a 1979 graduate of Davidson, has served as a team physician for the Wildcats for more than a decade. He has also taken part in medical mission trips to Belarus, Nicaragua and Mexico.
All coaches are CPR certified and have completed a community first-aid course to complement the efforts of the training room staff as necessary.
