Third Season
Tod Gross is in his third season at Davidson College, where he works with the infielders and hitters and assists in all recruiting efforts. Gross joined the staff full time for the 2011 season after serving as a volunteer assistant coach in 2010.
In 2011, Gross coached left fielder Forrest Brandt to All-SoCon Freshman team honors, after he and fellow outfielder Drew Gadaire ranked among league leaders in all major offensive categories throughout the season.
Prior to joining the Davidson staff, Gross served as an assistant baseball coach at Belmont Abbey College for two seasons, where he was in charge of the development of the infield, assisting with the hitters and serving as the third base coach in 2009. Gross also served the program in a variety of ways, being actively involved in the recruitment of student-athletes, planning and executing daily practice plans, creating in-season and out-of-season strength and conditioning programs and helping to maintain the budget.
In 2009, Belmont Abbey won the South East regional, advancing to the Division II College World Series and finishing that season ranked in the top five in both major polls. As a defense, the Crusaders finished seventh in the country in turning double plays, while leading the Conference Carolinas in assists, putouts, chances and double plays.
In 2008, the Crusaders had a .955 fielding percentage and three all-conference infielders, including first baseman Will Breslin, second baseman and 10th-round selection Alex Castellanos and shortstop Carlos Vasquez. Gross’s third baseman, freshman Elio Rey, was named to the Conference Carolinas Gold Glove team.
Prior to his tenure at Belmont Abbey, Gross spent two seasons on the staff at Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. With the Quakers, Gross served as the recruiting coordinator and worked with the infielders and outfielders and oversaw all aspects of the defensive game plan while assisting with the hitters. In his first season, the Quakers set a new school mark in batting average and recorded the seventh best fielding percentage in school history. Gross coached three all-conference players and two all-south region during his two seasons.
Gross began his coaching career at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Penn., where he worked primarily with the infielders and assisted with the hitters. In his three seasons, the Diplomats recorded three of the top four seasons in school history in fielding percentage, including setting a new school record in 2005. During the 2005 season Franklin & Marshall captured the Centennial Conference regular-season championship and won the Conference Tournament to advance to the Division III NCAA Mid-Atlantic regional, which was the Diplomats first regional bid and first conference championship in 10 years. The Diplomats recorded a 66-52 record in Gross’ three seasons.
From 2003-2004, Gross served as an assistant coach with the Quarryville (Penn.) legion team. Gross worked with the infielders and outfielders and also worked with the hitters. During the 2003 season, Gross helped coach the All-East team in the Pennsylvania East-West Legion All-Star game and has also worked various camps and clinics over the years.
Gross attended Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., where he was a four-year letterwinner on the baseball team and served as a captain during his junior and senior seasons. After his senior season, Gross received the inaugural Irene A. Schutt award for dedication and Inspiration on and off the field. Tod’s parent’s, Randy and Cheryl, live in Lebanon, Penn., while his sister Kelli resides in Elizabethtown, Penn.
