DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson women's basketball program hit the states of Michigan, Virginia and New York to find its tallest recruiting class of the Watts' era. They came away with two all-state selections and an inside-outside, double-double performer. All three will sign in the early signing period as announced by head coach Annette Watts.
The Wildcats will welcome center Sarah Davis, power forward Sophia Aleksandravicius, and point guard Barbara Sitton to the Wildcat program next year.
“My staff and I are extremely excited about the class of 2013,” said Watts. “We have worked hard to yield not only solid basketball prospects, but top students-athletes. Each of the three prospects fit well in our program here at Davidson.”
A 6-3 center from St. Clair, Mich., Davis has had a terrific three-year career at St. Clair high school as she enters her senior prep-season. A team MVP honoree last year as a junior, Davis has been awarded all-state, all-league, and all-area while at St. Clair. She was the team's Offensive Player of the Year in 2006-07 when she led the Saints to the state finals.
“Sarah is a post player who can run the floor in transition and is smooth on her finish around the basket,” said Watts. “She demands the ball inside and plays determined to command the paint. She'll definitely be a force down low for us next year.”
Davis has been a St. Clair Athlete of the Week and an all-state academic team member during her prep career. The center has excelled in the classroom as well, picking up department awards in biology, geometry, anatomy, U.S. history and twice in chemistry.
Aleksandravicius is a native of Pound Ridge, N.Y., where she has played the past three years at the School of the Holy Child. A 6-4 power forward, Aleksandravicius joined the 1,000-point club last season after averaging a double-double, 18 points and 20 rebounds per game. In addition, the senior prepster dished out an average of six assists to earn her second straight team MVP and all-league honors.
“Sophia has a tremendous amount of raw talent,” said Watts. “At 6-4, she has a defensive presence inside, yet, is versatile enough to both post up and shoot the three at the offensive end. Her hunger to learn and contribute will help give her the opportunity to do big things here.”
Aleksandravicius guided her team to the Fairchester League Title last year and was also chosen MVP of the Westlake Tournament for the second year in a row. After receiving early interest from Georgetown and Boston College, she narrowed her choices to three, choosing Davidson over Holy Cross and Harvard.
The New York native, who twice lead her AAU team to the nationals (2005 & 2006), also has lettered in volleyball and tennis during her prep career. The three-sport star garnered team MVP honors her junior campaign in volleyball and was picked for all-league team.
The 6-4 post player has also excelled in academics, earning a spot on the academic all-state team as a junior, and being honored with superior achievement in math and history. Aleksandravicius is a member of the National Honor Society and Athletic Advisory Group.
The Wildcats final recruit comes from Richmond, Va., where she has starred for Lloyd C. Bird high school as its starting point guard. Sitton has picked up numerous awards during the first three years of her prep career, including a spot on the third-team All-State in Virginia. The 5-5 guard has been a member of the first-team All-Dominion District, the first-team All-Digital Sports in Virginia, second-team All-Central Region and second-team All-Metro as named by the Richmond Times Dispatch. She has also been a co-MVP and Defensive MVP on her team.
Sitton averaged 10 points a game as a junior prepster, while dishing out five assists and pocketing three steals a contest.
“Barbara has the floor vision of a mature player,” said Watts. “She can create off the dribble and makes the players around her better as she'll bring speed to our perimeter. We are excited about the strengths she brings to our team for next year.”
The senior prepster has also been honored for her academic success, earning Richmond Times Dispatch Scholar-Athlete of the Month and All-American Scholar by United States Achievement Academy. In addition, she has been named to the Dominion District Virginia High School (VHS) League All-Academic team and the VHS League Central Region All-Academic team. Sitton has been awarded the VHS League Award of Excellence and the VHS League Good Sportsmanship Award.
A winner of the Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering at Lloyd C. Bird, Sitton is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society. Other academic achievements include: the President's Education Award Program, National Honor Roll Student, West Point Leadership Award, Tobisha/NSTA ExploraVision Certificate of Achievement, and active Key Club Membership Award.
Davidson, which won its lone exhibition game, 75-48, over Mars Hill last Sunday, Nov. 9, will open up at the Winthrop Hilton Garden Inn Classic this weekend with games against Winthrop and either North Carolina A&T or Mississippi.
