Former Wildcat Golfer Scott Sheftall Earns Spot in U.S. Senior Open

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Former Davidson Wildcat golfer Scott Sheftall ’73 will compete in the U.S. Senior Open this week after recently qualifying for the event when he shot a 70 at the Delray Dunes Golf Course in Boynton Beach, Fla. to force a three-way sudden death playoff for the second and final qualifying spot.

Sheftall birdied his last hole, a 10-foot putt, to force a three-way playoff, and then earned the final qualifying spot with a birdie in the playoffs.

“It's been a great experience and I'm truly looking forward to the week at the Senior Open,” said Sheftall. “It's been a thrill and I can't wait to be playing against some of the best golfers in the world. To be representing Davidson College as well, it's just an honor and dream come true for me. I've got a lot of support from friends and family, so now I just have to go out, have fun and enjoy playing a sport I love.”

It is the first time a Wildcat has qualified for the U.S. Senior Open and for Sheftall, it is also his first time in two tries. He previously had tried to qualify in 2007.

This year's open takes place in Colorado Springs, Colo. at the Broadmoor Country Club, July 28-Aug. 3, with practice rounds taking place Monday through Wednesday. Highlighting the field this year will be Greg Norman, Mark O'Meara, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Watson, Hale Irwin and Fuzzy Zoeller.

Sheftall is set to tee off on Thursday, July 31 at 7:20 a.m. (MST) with Jim Prusia and Scott Mahlberg. He then will turn around and tee off on Friday, Aug. 1 at 12 p.m.

A member of the Southern Conference runner-up team at Davidson in 1973, Sheftall graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature. He then went to University of Florida College of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1976. He currently is a board certified civil trial lawyer in Miami Beach, Fla.
