DAVIDSON, N.C. — After appearing in a pair of tournaments on the road, the Davidson Wildcat volleyball team will open its 2008 home season, hosting Charlotte, George Mason and Rutgers in the Mizuno Wildcat Classic, Friday and Saturday at Belk Arena.

The tournament gets underway tomorrow, opening play with George Mason and Rutgers at 4:30 p.m. The Wildcats hit the court for the first of three matches in the nightcap, battling cross-country rival Charlotte at 7 p.m.

Saturday's action kicks off with Charlotte and Rutgers at 10 a.m., followed by the 'Cats' second match, against George Mason at 12:30 p.m. George Mason plays a double-header, taking on Charlotte at 4:30 p.m., and the Wildcats will wrap up tournament play against Rutgers at 7 p.m.

Davidson enters the tournament with a 1-5 overall record, having traveled to the Black and Gold Challenge at Wake Forest and The Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill. The 'Cats defeated Norfolk State, 3-0, and have suffered losses to Wake, Winthrop, Georgetown, Missouri State and North Carolina. Senior middle blocker Kittery Neale was named to the All-Tournament team both weekends, having posted 41 kills, 36 digs and 13 blocks.

Charlotte enters the weekend with a 5-3 overall record, including wins over Houston Baptist, Campbell, North Carolina Central, Howard and Norfolk State. The 49ers' three losses came against Elon, UNC Greensboro and Youngstown, the latter in the championship match in their own Comfort Suites 49er Tournament. Redshirt sophomore Kat Hicks and senior setter Courtney Cowles earned All-Tournament honors at both the 49ers' tournament and the Hilton RTP/NCCU Volleyball Tournament, while senior libero Carly Romberg set the team's career digs record with 18 in the team's 3-1 win over Howard.

George Mason brings a 1-5 overall record into the Wildcat Classic. The Patriots lost three matches at the D.C. Volleyball Challenge, dropping contests against local rivals American, Georgetown and host George Washington. Hosting its own tournament the following weekend, George Mason picked up a win over Saint Francis, but posted losses against Liberty and New Mexico. The Patriots are led by junior outside hitter Rebecca Walter, who has amassed 56 kills, averaging 3.11 per game, while hitting .245 (56-16-163).

Rutgers also has a 1-5 overall record after a pair of weekend tournaments. The Scarlet Knights were swept by Binghampton, Northern Arizona and Akron at the Northern Arizona Tournament in Flagstaff, Ariz. The following weekend at George Mason's Tournament, Rutgers dropped contests against New Mexico and Liberty, but picked up its first win against La Salle in the team's second match of the tournament to snap a 17-match losing streak dating back to last season. The Scarlet Knights are led by sophomore outside hitter Caitlin Saxton, who has 46 kills (2.42/game) but is hitting just .092 (46-30-173).
