SPARTANBURG, S.C. — In their first meet of the season, the Wildcat women's cross country team finished third at the 25th annual Eye Opener, hosted by USC Upstate University on Saturday morning.
The Wildcats were without the services of senior Caroline Sanker and can no longer count on Brenna Burns to pace the field, but Jen Straub's 2008 squad, picked to finish fourth in the preseason SoCon Coaches' Poll, is being led by some talented underclassmen.
Sophomore Danielle Ruggieri finished fourth to lead the Wildcats, while freshman Jane Gay made a splash in her collegiate debut with a fifth-place finish. Both runners were named to the All-Tournament Team for finishing in the top 10.
Sophomore Lauren Childs placed 12th, and sophomore Heather Conarroe (33) and senior Emily King (34) filled out the scoring for the 'Cats.
"We did quite well today," head coach Jen Straub said. "We finished ahead of all of the Southern Conference teams in the meet, so we are obviously pleased with our performance as a team! We had a pair of All-Invitational runners with Danielle and Jane both running great races, and when Caroline returns to the mix, I think we can compete with anybody!"
With just 40 points, the Clemson Lady Tigers topped all women's teams with all five runners placing in the top 10, followed by the runner-up South Carolina Lady Gamecocks with 82 points.
The Wildcats finished third, amassing just 88 points, ahead of fourth-place Furman (96) and fifth-place Elon (114). USC Upstate (138), the College of Charleston (193), UNC Greensboro (237), the Citadel (279) and Georgia Southern (306) rounded out the top 10.
The 25th annual Eye Opener featured over 70 college teams, including 13 in the women's Division I, and 3,100 runners, making it the largest cross country meet in the state of South Carolina.
The Wildcats will take a weekend off before traveling the short distance to the Winthrop Invitational on Sept. 20.
