DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving team will host the East Carolina Pirates at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cannon Natatorium.
About the Wildcats
Junior
Lindsey Martin and freshman
Drew Onken were named CCSA Women’s and Men’s Swimmer of the Week after combining for five individual titles in the
Wildcats' season-opener against Clemson Oct. 3. As a team, the Wildcat women amassed 123 points to Clemson's 177. On the men’s side, the Clemson Tigers won by a 183-92 margin.
Martin opened her 2009-10 season by winning a pair of individual events and contributed to a pair of winning relays. The 2009 CCSA champion and school-record holder in both events, Martin won the 50 free (23.76) and the 100 free (52.99) in her first competition of the season.
She also swam the anchor leg on both of the Wildcats’ winning relays. In the 200 medley relay, Martin combined with classmates
Anna Stringfield,
Alexa Richardson and
Emily Castle for a first-place time of 1:51.01. Martin then swam with Castle, freshman
Jean DeOrnellas and junior
Jessica Delgehausen on the winning 400 freestyle relay, with a time of 3:35.34.
In his first collegiate competition, Onken won both breaststroke events and the 200 IM against Clemson. In the 100 yard breaststroke, he was the only swimmer to break the one-minute mark with a time of 59.89. He also won the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:08.59 and finished off his day by winning the 200 IM in 1:56.04.
Castle, Delgehausen and freshman
Kelsi Hobbs also won events for the Wildcats. Castle won the 100 butterfly, the only swimmer under a minute with a 56.28, and Delgehausen won the 500 freestyle wih a time of 5:11.10. Hobbs won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.81.
Sophomore
Curtis Chaney finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:45.77), and junior
Bryan Droll was the runner-up in the 50 freestyle (21.93).
About the Pirates
The East Carolina men and women’s swimming and diving team were swept by North Carolina in their season-opening dual meet Thursday Oct. 16 at Minges Aquatic Center. The Pirate men dropped a 187-105 decision, while the women fell to the Tar Heels, 183-105. The Pirates will make a two-meet road trip of it, with a competition at Gardner-Webb Friday evening.
Junior Andrew Stoker was the top performer for the men with the Pirates’ lone first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.71. He also scored in the 200 butterfly with a fourth-place finish (1:52.52).
On the women’s side, junior Jenna Stewart earned a second-place finish in both the 50 (23.84) and 100 freestyle (52.63), while sophomore Kelsey Brosi recorded a pair of third place finishes in the 50 (24.52) and 200 freestyle (1:54.23).
Sophomore diver Meghan Coyne qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships with a Minges Pool record score of 269.40 on the one-meter springboard. She was named Conference USA Diver of the Week for her performance.
