DAVIDSON, N.C. — Riding an eight-game unbeaten streak and coming off its fourth Southern Conference Tournament Title, the Davidson women's soccer team was placed in the North Carolina Region and will play a first-round match against No. 2-seeded and 8th ranked South Carolina in the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Davidson will square off against the Gamecocks, who will host the first and second rounds, on Friday, Nov. 13 in Columbia, S.C., at Stone Stadium. Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
The winner of Davidson's first-round matchup will advance to face the victor of the game between Rutgers (13-3-4) and Duke (8-8-4) on Sunday, Nov. 15 in the second round.
Making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats (12-9-1) took home their fourth league tournament title with two 1-0 wins over UNC Greensboro in the semifinals and College of Charleston in the finals last weekend. Davidson's three other titles came in 1994, '95 and '96, but the SoCon did not have an automatic bid in the NCAA Championships during that time period.
This will be the ninth time the two teams have faced each other, with the last meeting taking place in 2003 when the Gamecocks took home a 4-1 victory in Columbia, S.C.
South Carolina (17-3-2) won the program's first SEC Championship when the team knocked off LSU in Sunday's final by an 8-7 margin in penalty kicks. The Gamecocks have advanced to the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons, earning a draw against Duke in 2007 and falling to William & Mary in overtime in 2008.
