DAVIDSON, N.C. - Behind a stifling defense and freshman Finley Amato's first career goal, the Davidson field hockey team picked up its first win of the 2009 season with a 1-0 victory over Sacred Heart on a warm Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
Amato scored what turned out to be the game-winner at the 31:32 mark of the first half when she collected her own rebound from the top of the left side of the circle, drove in and fired a shot past the diving goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Amato led all players with a career-high four shots on the game, all of which were on goal.
Holding on to the one-goal advantage, the 'Cats were able to withstand a last-ditch comeback effort by Sacred Heart (0-2), who took four penalty corners and fired three shots in the final six minutes of play.
The Wildcat defense preserved the lead with a shut-down effort throughout the game, holding Sacred Heart to just three shots on goal, and just one shot in the entire first half. Senior goalkeeper Christa Goeke made three saves to register the shut out, and moved into a tie for fourth place on the Davidson career saves list with 255 stops.
For the contest, Davidson (1-1) held a 14-7 advantage in shots, including out-shooting SHU 10-1 in the first half. Six different players recorded a scoring attempt, with Hannah English and Christine Rua each taking three and Clare Perry taking a pair, both of which were on goal. Pioneer goalie Kim Stow recorded eight saves in the loss, and Davidson had an 8-5 lead in penalty corners.
Davidson will head on the road for a pair of neutral site games in the nation's capital this weekend, starting with a match-up against Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 4 at 2:00 p.m. Then on Saturday, Sept. 5, the 'Cats will take on Cornell at 2:00 p.m. Both games will take place at American University in Washington, D.C.
