DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Vitaly Radsky led the Davidson wrestling team on the day with two pins, as the ‘Cats defeated Franklin & Marshall, 33-20 and lost to Gardner-Webb, 31-23 on Saturday afternoon in Belk Arena.

Franklin & Marshall (0-6-1) spotted Davidson (1-10) 18 points by forfeiting at 125, 133 and 285 pounds, while the ‘Cats forfeited at 174 pounds. The two teams split the six contested bouts 3-3.

Gardner-Webb (1-6-1) held just a two-point lead entering the final bout of the match, but the nation’s 13th-ranked heavyweight Dustin Porter secured the Bulldog’s victory over the ‘Cats by pinning junior Charlie Wolff.

Radsky (141 pounds) improved to 6-1 in dual meets, and 11-5 overall with his first two pins of the season. Sophomore Tyler Mullen (165) also won by fall against Franklin & Marshall, and via forfeit against Gardner-Webb.

Radsky pinned Matt Murray in the first bout at 141 in 1:50 to give Davidson an early 18-0 lead. The Diplomats responded with a major decision victory at 149, but junior Joe McGinley earned a 4-0 decision at 157 pounds, and Mullen pinned Matthew Gittleman in 3:11 to put the match out of reach at 27-4.

The Diplomats closed the gap after Davidson forfeited at 174, Matt Fullowan earned a major decision at 184 pounds, and Colin Ely won by fall at 197 pounds. However, they were forced to forfeit at 285 pounds for the final 33-20 score.

Davidson opened the Gardner-Webb match with a six-point advantage after senior Ben Altman went unopposed for the second-time at 125 pounds. The Radsky brothers extended the lead to 17-0 as Alex Radsky (133) earned a technical fall over Brett Kostern, 22-5, and Vitaly (141) pinned Morgan McDaniel in 2:47.

The Bulldogs roared back though and took the remaining contested matches. The Medved brothers matched the Radskys, as Ryan Medved earned a technical fall at 149 pounds and Alex Medved pinned Joe McGinley at 157 pounds. G-W forfeited the 165-pound bout, while Davidson forfeited at 174, which left Davidson with a 23-17 lead. Blake Salyer (184) and Jonathan Velazquez (197) earned major decisions to put Gardner-Webb on top, 25-23, before Porter pinned Wolff in 2:38 to ice the win.

Gardner-Webb and Franklin & Marshall wrestled to a 20-20 tie prior to the Davidson matches.

The ‘Cats will next face both VMI and Millersville on Friday, Jan. 22 in Lexington, Va.
