RALEIGH, N.C. -- Senior Lindsey Martin won a pair of individual events and contributed to the winning 200 freestyle relay as the Davidson Wildcat swimming and diving team competed against the NC State Wolfpack Saturday afternoon at the Triangle Aquatic Center.
Martin won the 50 free with a time of 23.80, just a tenth of a second off her CCSA season-best time. She also won the 100 free for a third straight meet, finishing with a season-best time of 51.79.
In the sprint format, classmate Emily Castle won the 50 fly with a time of 25.63 and was defeated for the first time this season in the 100 fly as N.C. State's Jordan Paavola just outtouched her at the wall. Paavola won the event with a time of 57.00, while Castle clocked in at 57.02.
For their best time of the season, Castle and Martin combined with sophomore Jean DeOrnellas and freshman Liz Mace for a winning time of 1:37.12 in the 200 freestyle relay finale.
N.C. State won both team titles, defeating the Davidson women, 175-115, and the Wildcat men, 183.5-102.5.
"The score belies the progress that many team members are making," head coach John Young said. "Some shorter races gave us a chance to demonstrate speed, even amidst a significant training load. We had fun, and we look forward to next weekend's meet at home."
Junior Curtis Chaney was also an individual winner for the Wildcats, finishing first with a season-best time of 1:43 in the 200 freestyle.
The 'Cats also turned in several runner-up performances, led by sophomore Drew Onken, who was second in the 100 breast with a time of 59.58 and in the 500 free with a time of 4:42.54, just off conference-best times in back-to-back races immediately after a fourth-place finish in the 100 back (with a time of 54.42, second-best in the league).
Junior Geoff Peitz finished second in the 50 back with a time of 24.17, and classmate David Kerman was second in the 50 breast with a time of 27.44. Junior Joe Burquist turned in the second-best time in the 50 fly (23.09).
After three straight meets on the road, the Wildcats will open their home season when they host CCSA-foe the College of Charleston at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 30 at Cannon Natatorium.
