DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Callan Elswick (Locust Grove, Va.) of the Davidson women's soccer team has made the final round of the 2010 women's soccer Lowe's Senior CLASS Award as she was selected as one of the 10 finalists that were announced today by the awards committee.
The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 men's candidates and 30 women's candidates, which Elswick was a part of, that were announced in August. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote via the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award website through November 14. Fan votes will be combined with media and coaches votes to determine the winner. Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winners during the 2010 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup championships in early December.
To have been eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
“To be a part of this final list of seniors is a tremendous honor and a great achievement for Callan, I'm very thrilled for her,” said head coach Greg Ashton. “As a team captain this year, she has done a fantastic job, and it's also a wonderful honor for the program to have Callan represent Davidson women's soccer. This is an indication of the type of student-athletes that we are trying to attract at Davidson College.”
A two-time All-SoCon Academic Team member and a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Team member last year, Elswick is majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies and carries a 3.88 GPA.
This year the senior has started eight of her nine games and recorded a goal for two points. Elswick had a breakout junior campaign that saw her set personal bests in starts (16), goals (2), assists (3) and points (7). She helped guide the Wildcats to their first NCAA Tournament in program history after taking home the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament Title.
In 68 career games (28 of them starts), the senior forward has netted five goals and assisted on five others for 15 total points.
Off the field, the senior has been very active. Elswick served an internship this summer at the Campaign for Migrant Worker Justice (CMWJ) and Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). As a Latino Studies major, she is writing her thesis on the unionization of Latino migrant workers and their access to health care. This past spring, Elswick studied abroad doing an internship at Movimiento M-33, Cuernavaca, Mexico. The Premedical Advisory Committee at Davidson also awarded her the Daniel Blain Woods Memorial Award for exhibiting the qualities needed by a good doctor: wisdom, compassion, the desire to serve, the ability to analyze problems, integrity, academic excellence and an empathetic heart.
Two summers ago, Elswick observed at the 198 Youth Health Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand. She traveled to the Mwandi Mission Hospital in Zambia as part of the Davidson in Mwandi Program in order to observe the medical staff, give immunizations at outreach clinics, aid in a variety of community service projects, and participate in antiretroviral therapy counseling sessions. She also served an internship at the Pan American Health Organization.
