Field Hockey Defeated in Penalty Strokes By Cal In NorPac Semifinals

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Despite a tremendous effort, the Davidson field hockey team saw their NorPac Championship hopes come to an end in heart-breaking fashion, as California edged the Wildcats in penalty strokes, 5-3, to take a 3-2 win in the semifinal round of the 2010 NorPac Championship Friday evening at Belk Turf Field.

The two teams played to a 2-2 tie in regulation but neither could break the deadlock in the two ensuing 15-minute, sudden-victory periods, sending the game to penalty strokes.

Cal (10-8) goalkeeper Maddie Hand stopped Davidson's first penalty stroke attempt, and Lisa Lohre converted the clinching attempt to meet Stanford in Saturday's NorPac Championship game at 1:30 p.m. Davidson (14-7) will face Longwood in the third-place game at 11 a.m.

Sophomore Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) led the 'Cats attack with nine shots and tied the game at one in the 40th minute, knocking in a rebound of a shot taken by junior Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.). The duo teamed up again just one minute and seven seconds later as Amato scored off a rebound from Rua's initial shot.

Davidson held a 2-1 lead until the 51st minute when Lohre tied it at 2-2.

Both goalkeepers made big saves to keep their teams in the game. Hand made four saves in a 20-second span midway through the first overtime, as junior Gray Robinson (Lousiville, Ky.), Rua and senior Jennie Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) peppered her with shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) blunted several Cal attacks, intercepting crosses and challenging shooters. With one minute remaining in the second overtime, she made a diving stick save on a breakaway to keep the 'Cats in the game.

The Wildcats controlled the possession for much of the game and were strong defensively. Junior Steph Meador (Hummelstown, Pa.) chased down Cal attackers, keeping the ball out of the circle, and junior Hannah Lawrence (Shaker Heights, Ohio) recorded a defensive save. Cal turned up the heat at the end of the second overtime period and drew a pair of penalty corner attempts, but the 'Cats were able to hold the Golden Bears without a shot.

Both teams finished even in penalty corners with nine each, and Davidson held a 23-22 advantage in shots.

Hand finished with 11 saves while Fisher made eight. Megan Shimojima scored Cal's first goal in the 13th minute.

Notes: Amato's goal was her 16th of the season and gives her a team-record 39 points for the season … Davidson is 1-1 in the NorPac third-place game, winning in 2000.
