DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Clemson Tigers needed a win in the final relay to defeat the Davidson Wildcat men, 153-135, and also defeated the Wildcat women, 177-123, Saturday afternoon in both teams' season-opener at Cannon Natatorium.
Senior Geoffrey Peitz won three titles in the Wildcats' season debut, sweeping the backstrokes and winning the 100 fly with a time of 50.55. The school-record holder in all three events, he won the 100 back with a time of 51.22 and came back to complete the sweep with a winning-time of 1:52.04 in the 200 back.
Junior Drew Onken and freshman Dylan Ludwick each won a pair of event titles for the Wildcat men, but Clemson finished first and second in the final relay of the day to secure the victory.
"The team, today, enjoyed the privilege of racing against a great team with a storied history," head coach John Young said. "In my mind, we paid the Clemson Tigers the greatest respect that we could – we dug deep and took our best shot. A college swimming meet decided in the last relay is a real treat, and I'm exceedingly proud of our team's first step of the season."
Onken finished first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.11, and won a second title with a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.41.
Ludwick made a splash in his debut, winning both the 1000 free (9:43.69) and the 500 free (4:45.11). Senior Curtis Chaney won the 200 free with a time of 1:42.61, followed immediately by freshman Ben Stewart-Bates (1:44.54), who also finished second in the 500 free (4:45.16).
On the women's side, the Wildcats got a couple standout performances from some newcomers as well. Freshman Meredith Nakano won her first collegiate title, edging out sophomore Caroline Vrana in the 100 breaststroke. Nakano won the event with a time of 1:07.10, and Vrana was just behind with a time of 1:08.16. The duo also went one-two in the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:25.29 and 2:30.84, respectively. Freshman Mackenzie Robinson finished first in the 200 back with a time of 2:10.27.
Davidson returns to action on October 15 when they host the East Carolina Pirates at 1 p.m. at Cannon Natatorium.
