DAVIDSON, N.C. – Jake Keator's (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) strike from 25 yards out in the 82nd minute was the difference as Davidson scored a 1-0 upset victory over No. 2 North Carolina in non-conference men's soccer action Monday night before a record crowd of 1,941 in Alumni Stadium.
Sophomore Alex Givens (Raleigh, N.C./North Raleigh Christian Academy) found Keator open in the center of the field, and Keator maneuvered past a pair of defenders and sent a laser from 25 yards into the top right corner of the net. Davidson, which just had one win in its last six outings, improved to 6-6-2, while North Carolina fell to 11-2-1. The Tar Heels were on a nine-match unbeaten streak.
Senior goalkeeper Chip Sanders (Thomasville, Ga./Thomas County Central) made seven saves for his career-high seventh shutout of the season, as Carolina outshot Davidson 16-3 for the game. Sanders was particularly strong late, making a save in the 85th minute on North Carolina's Rob Lovejoy following a free kick. Billy Shuler had a chance to tie in the 86th minute, but his shot sailed high.
Defenders Greg Macnamara (Arlington, Va./Gonzaga College), Hunter Hayes (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr's Mill), Dennis Shannon (Denver, Colo./Collegiate Academy) and Allen Page (Columbus, Ga./Brookstone) made several defensive plays to keep the Tar Heels at bay.
Keator's goal was not the lone scoring opportunity for the 'Cats though.
The Wildcats appeared to take a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, but sophomore Chris Pettiglio (Westford, Mass./Bishop Guertin) was ruled offside. Freshman forward Gabe Rivera (Durham, N.C./Riverside) nearly gave the 'Cats the lead in the 57th minute, but his shot sailed just high. A header by Matt Hedges in the 8th minute went just high.
Davidson started generating more sustained pressure after the 80th minute, ultimately resulting in Keator's goal. The goal was his second of the season and the third of his career.
The win over North Carolina was Davidson's first since 2002, a 1-0 win at Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels prevailed in their most recent meeting in 2003, a 1-0 loss at Alumni Stadium. Davidson head coach Matt Spear was at the helm for both games, giving him a 2-1 record against UNC.
North Carolina's only other loss this season was at Virginia Tech, 1-0.
The win was Davidson's first over a Top-10 team since 2009, when they earned a 4-1 win over No. 6 Duke.
The Wildcats return to action Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Alumni Stadium, hosting Southern Conference foe Wofford.
