DAVIDSON, N.C. — After registering her fourth game-winning goal last Sunday, freshman Becca Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) capped off her outstanding week by earning Southern Conference Player of the Week honors for all matches from Oct. 10-16.
Fisher becomes the second Wildcat to garner the weekly honor this year after Julia Singley (Morganton, N.C.) earned the award on Aug. 23 to start the 2011 season. Since 1994, the Wildcats have garnered the second-most league player of the week honors with 28 now.
The freshman forward helped the Wildcats go 1-1 on the week with a pair of goals and an assist to total five points. Her week started on Thursday night, Oct. 13, at College of Charleston where she helped bring the Wildcats back from a 2-0 deficit. She assisted on the Wildcats' first goal in the early stages of the second half, and then, ripped a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that went just under the cross bar for the game-tying goal in the 61st minute before CofC went on to take a 3-2 decision.
In Sunday's match with The Citadel, the freshman sent a long shot to goal from the near sideline that hit the far side post and bounced in for her fourth game-winning score of the year at the 98:35 mark for a 2-1 triumph. The overtime goal improved Davidson to 5-3 on the season in league play, putting it in fourth place, and evened its overall record at 7-7-2.
Fisher has been on a scoring streak of late, tallying seven points on three goals and an assist over the last three games. Go back seven games and she has 13 points (4 goals, 1 assist) with all four game-winning goals coming during that span.
For the season, the freshman paces the team with seven goals, tied for fourth in the league, and 16 points. She has started all 15 of her games and ranks fourth in the SoCon in shots with 58.
The Wildcats hit the road for their final two away games this weekend. They will play at Samford next Friday, Oct. 21, and then travel to Chattanooga on Sunday.
