DAVIDSON, N.C. – A pair of Davidson teams will host fundraisers for breast cancer research, as men's soccer will host its inaugural Kick Cancer event when Appalachian State visits Alumni Stadium Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. and the volleyball team will host its fourth annual Dig Pink game when Georgia Southern travels to Belk Arena Monday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m.

Both teams will be selling t-shirts on campus at Alvarez Student Union, at all remaining volleyball and men's soccer home contests and at the football game vs. Campbell Oct. 29.  T-shirts may be purchased for $15 each, or a men's soccer and a volleyball shirt can be purchased together for $25.  Proceeds from the sale of men's soccer t-shirts will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the sale of volleyball shirts will benefit the Side Out Foundation.  Those not able to purchase an event shirt in person can email Assistant Director of Marketing Richard Agner at riagner@davidson.edu to place an order.

The volleyball team hopes to raise $5000 through donations, sales of t-shirts and personalized pink volleyballs (to be displayed at the Nov. 7 game) and a silent auction including Davidson autographed items, a Davidson volleyball game experience, golf outings, a boat rental, and other items from local vendors.  Donations can be accepted online here, or can be made wherever shirts are sold.

The inaugural Kick Cancer event was spawned by two of Davidson's tri-captains, Brian McGue and Greg Macnamara, as a show of support for fellow captain Chip Sanders, whose mother, Nicki, is currently fighting breast cancer.

“Since my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in May, I have met countless people who have been affected by the disease,” said Sanders. “We just really want to continue to raise awareness about the disease and with everyone's help, hopefully make a sizable donation to the Susan G. Komen foundation.”

“We wanted to organize this event because breast cancer has had an effect on almost all of our lives,” McGue said.  “Whether it be our mothers, grandmothers, friends, just about everyone on the team has someone close to them who is fighting or survived breast cancer.  Hopefully, this event will help emphasize the importance of finding a cure and also provide additional funds to support current research.”
