Davidson Sees Its Season End, Falls to Furman 2-1 in SoCon W. Soccer Quarterfinals

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's soccer team saw its 2011 season come to an end when Furman's Hannah Stanifer knocked in a rebound shot in the 88th minute to give the Paladins a 2-1 win on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament at Alumni Stadium.
The Wildcats, who were seeded fourth and earned the right to host a quarterfinal game, closed out its season at 9-9-2. They fell to 16-13 all-time in the SoCon Tournament and saw their current five-match win streak at home come to end.
Fifth-seeded Furman (12-7-2) moves onto the semifinals next weekend in Greensboro, N.C., where it will match up with the winner of Samford/Western Carolina.
Down 1-0, the freshman duo of Stephanie Piperno (Harwinton, Conn.) and Becca Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.) hooked up for the 'Cats lone goal in the 35th minute to tie the score. Fisher sent a great pass to the streaking Piperno who dribbled past the defense about 20 yards out and went one-on-one with the goalkeeper, who came out to challenge. Piperno then fired a shot to the left post past the diving goalkeeper for her sixth goal of the year.
Fisher's assist was her fourth, to tie for the team lead, and she finished with a team-best 18 points. She had a team-high seven goals as well. Piperno finished right behind her fellow classmate with 15 points on six goals and three assists.
The two teams have now met in the league tournament seven times, with the Paladins going 6-1 in those contests. The 'Cats' lone win came in the finals of the 1995 tournament, with them taking home a 3-0 win on their home field.
