Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcats used three extra-base hits for a pair of runs to cut No. 21 College of Charleston's lead in half in the eighth inning but the rally came too late, as the Cougars won the opening game of the SoCon series, 4-2, Friday night at Wilson Field.

Playing its SoCon opener, preseason favorite College of Charleston (13-2, 1-0 SoCon) did almost all of its scoring on a pair of home runs and got nearly all of its offensive production from catcher Rob Kral (3-for-3, HR, RBI) and second baseman Jesse Mesa (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI).

Reigning Pitcher of the Week Chris Lamb (L, 1-2) and David Peterson (W, 3-0) took turns putting up zeroes through the first three innings, but the home run ball made the difference. Charleston took a 2-0 lead on Mesa's two-out, two-run blast in the fourth and added another on a leadoff shot by Kral in the seventh. Davidson (6-8, 1-2 SoCon) used three doubles for a pair of runs in the eighth, but Kyle Owings pitched the final 1 2/3 of hitless ball for his third save of the season.

Kral got the game's first hit, a one-out single in the second, but right fielder Kelly Myers laid out for the second out and Lamb got another fly ball to right to strand him. Senior designated hitter Danny Weiss (1-for-3) got the Wildcats' first hit, leading off the bottom half, but was wiped from the base paths on a double play.

After striking out two in a hitless third, Lamb got third baseman Matt Leeds to fly out and sat first baseman Jose Rodriguez down on strikes before Kral's two-out base hit in the fourth. Mesa hit his first home run of the season in the next at-bat to put Charleston ahead, 2-0.

Junior center fielder Drew Gadaire made it all the way to third in the home half of the inning, reaching safely on a fielder's choice that eliminated freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (2-for-4, RBI) before stealing second and taking third on a balk. But Peterson came back with two of his six strikeouts.

Lamb faced the minimum in both the fifth and the sixth before Kral's leadoff home run in the seventh. Junior catcher Seth Freeman (2-for-4, RBI), meanwhile, slapped a one-out single up the middle in the sixth, but Peterson used a fly out and a punch out to keep Davidson off the scoreboard.

The Wildcats had something going in the seventh when Weiss drew a leadoff walk and sophomore third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-4)  followed with a base knock to center field, but Davidson hit into its second double play of the game. Designated hitter Dre Watts took the mound for the Cougars and got the third out, and Charleston added another run on a hit and an error in the eighth to take a 4-0 lead.

Sophomore shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-2) started the scoring for Davidson in the eighth with a double to the gap in right field. Freeman drove him in with a one-out double to left, and Brandt followed with the Wildcats' third double of the frame for their second run. Kyle Owings (S, 3) took over for Charleston and put an end to the rally, working the final 1 2/3 of hitless relief to pick up his third save.

Davidson and Charleston return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. RHP Ian Horkley (1-1, 3.75) is slated to make the start for the Wildcats against Charleston's RHP Josh Salay (1-0, 2.45).
