Box Score
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Davidson used a four-run fourth to cut into an 8-2 Tar Heel lead, but No. 17 North Carolina scored six runs over the last three innings to come away with the 14-6 win on Wednesday night at Boshamer Stadium.
Davidson (5-6) took a 2-0 lead in the first, but North Carolina (8-1) answered in the bottom half to tie the score. The Tar Heels jumped out to a 8-2 lead behind a five-run third, but Davidson (5-6) made it interesting with a four-spot in the sixth behind a pair of two-out, two-RBI hits from both sophomore Michael Zeblo and freshman catcher Daniel Gerow to cut UNC's lead to just two. North Carolina reclaimed control of the game with two runs in the sixth and a four-run seventh for the final, 14-6.
The Wildcats finished with six hits, led by freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (2-for-4). Sophomore first baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-4), junior second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum (1-for-4), Zeblo (1-for-3, 2 RBI) and Gerow (1-for4, 2 RBI) also had a hit for the 'Cats.
North Carolina had 18 hits, led by center fielder Ben Bunting, who batted 3-for-6 with three RBI. Tommy Coyle, Levi Michael, Chaz Frank, Jesse Wierzbicki, Tom Zengel, and Seth Baldwin also had two hits each for the Heels.
The Wildcats started the scoring early, getting across a pair in the first half inning on a walk and a hit. Sophomore third baseman Jack McLindon took a free pass in the first at-bat of the game and moved over to third as Brandt doubled to left. McLindon scored the 'Cats first run as senior designated hitter Danny Weiss grounded out for the first out, and Brandt scored from third on a wild pitch to give Davidson a 2-0 lead.
The Heels took advantage of three straight one-out walks off freshman RHP Danny Mooney (L, 1-2) to knot the score in the home half. Catcher Jacob Stallings' sacrifice fly cut the Wildcats' lead in half before Frank's RBI-single tied the score.
Despite allowing three straight hits to start the second, the Wildcats limited the Heels to just one run on an RBI-single from Michael in the second, but North Carolina took control of the game with a five-run third. Mooney got Stallings on strikes to start the frame but hit Frank, and a two-run home run by Wierzbicki put the Heels ahead 5-2. UNC got another run on a ball hit well by Baldwin that got by Sigelbaum, and added another run on an RBI-groundout by Bunting and three straight base hits to take an 8-2 lead.
With RHP Ryan Overcash working a shutout 1 1/3, Davidson cut North Carolina's lead to 8-6 with a four-run sixth. With one out, Tar Heel reliever Shane Taylor gave way to RHP Tim Brechbuehler, who quickly got the second. But Barna and Sigelbaum started the Wildcat rally with back-to-back base hits, and sophomore center fielder Seth Freeman drew a walk to load the bases. Zeblo sent in a pair with a base hit to the gap in right, and pinch hitter Coleman Barron worked a walk to keep the inning alive. Both Barron and Freeman scored when Gerow singled to left. The Heels finally got out of the inning with a groundout by McLindon, but not before Davidson made things interesting, cutting the lead to 8-6.
North Carolina, though, answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half, on RBI-hits from Bunting and Coyle, and added four more on four hits and two Wildcat errors in the seventh to regain control of the game, 14-6.
UNC's Cody Stiles (W, 1-0) earned the win by allowing just two runs on two hits in four innings.
Davidson opens SoCon play with a three-game home stand against Furman this weekend. First game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday. Saturday's game will be played at 2 p.m., and the series finale is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday.
