DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson Wildcats will host the Duke Blue Devils tonight in a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Wilson Field, the second-to-last home game of the 2011 season.
Davidson (17-22, 8-15 SoCon) and Duke (20-23, 4-17 ACC) have already met once this season, a game that the Blue Devils won 7-5 in Durham on April 12.
Freshman left-hander Dillon Haviland (2-3, 4.38), who made four appearances as Duke's Friday starter, will start for the Blue Devils Wednesday night. Haviland has been one of Duke's top pitchers against non-conference teams, posting a 0.75 ERA in 12 innings against non-ACC teams. In his last midweek start, Haviland, who was drafted in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB Draft, threw five shutout innings in an 11-3 win over N.C. Central on March 15.
Having taken the loss against Duke earlier in the season, junior RHP Brian Russell (2-3, 6.66) will once again get the ball for the Wildcats. In the team's first meeting, Duke jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, with three runs in the first including a solo home run from Chris Marconcini, a single run in the second and two more in the third.
Freshman RHP Danny Mooney and senior LHP Mac Hunter combined for four shutout innings in relief of Russell, and the Wildcats responded with a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the seventh to cut Duke's lead to 6-4. After Duke got one back in the eighth, the Blue Devils would need junior David Putnam to stop the Wildcat rally in the ninth, when freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt hit a two-out triple and scored as junior first baseman Drew Gadaire followed with an RBI-double.
Davidson finished with 10 hits, led by Brandt (3-for-5, RBI) and Weiss (2-for-4). Gadaire drove in a team-high two RBI. Duke tallied 11 hits and was led by third baseman Jordan Betts, who batted 2-for-4 and drove in three. Robert Huber improved to 4-0 by allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out six in six innings.
