DAVIDSON, N.C. – Ann Fucigna and Erin Keitel each scored two goals, and the Davidson defense recorded 13 caused turnovers as the Wildcats posted an 11-6 women's lacrosse victory over Liberty in the quarterfinal round of the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament at Richardson Stadium Friday afternoon.
Davidson will meet top-seeded Jacksonville in the semifinal round Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Richardson Stadium, while Liberty plays Howard in a consolation game at 9 a.m.
Fucigna and Keitel each tallied assists for three points on the day, and nine different players scored for Davidson (6-11). Lily Graham posted six caused turnovers and eight ground balls, both career highs for the senior defender. Jessica Melby, Stella Davis and Taylor Ketcham each tallied two caused turnovers, and the Wildcats tied their season low by allowing just six goals.
Jen Moyer and Kristin Crowley led Liberty (6-11) with two goals each.
Leading 5-4 at the break, the 'Cats outscored Liberty 6-2 in the second half. After Crowley scored for the Flames to trim the margin to one goal early in the second stanza, Davidson netted five of the next six goals, with Keitel getting two, to take control. A Jenna Mugele tally with 3:55 left made the score 11-6 and put the contest out of reach.
Davidson jumped out to a 4-1 lead after scoring three straight goals midway through the first half. Alanna Parker ignited the stretch with a free-position goal, and Paige Logan added a goal off a Keitel assist 2:40 later. Erin Doherty capped the run with an unassisted tally with 14:46 left in the frame.
The Flames answered with three consecutive scores, the last two coming on free-position shots by Crowley and Karis Walborn, to tie the game at 4-4 with 6:17 remaining. Fucigna broke the tie with an unassisted goal with 1:13 left as the Wildcats led 5-4 at the break.
Notes: Davidson advanced to the championship game in 2010, the first year of the tournament… The Wildcats are now 3-1 all-time in the NLC Tournament… Davidson improved to 3-0 all-time against Liberty… The 'Cats are now 5-2 in the month of April.
