DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats will host the UNC Asheville Bulldogs at 6 p.m. Wednesday night in non-conference play at Wilson Field, in a rained out game rescheduled from March 15.
About the Series
Davidson (13-14, 6-8 SoCon) leads the all-time series with UNC Asheville (10-17, 4-5 Big South), 21-7. The teams first began playing on March 15, 1989 and last met last season, a 7-6 win in the first game of a doubleheader on March 6 at Wilson Field. Prior to that meeting, the series had taken a seven-year hiatus, last playing April 1, 2003 in Davidson, a 2-7 loss for the 'Cats. Asheville defeated Davidson, 15-12, the previous year April 4. Prior to those back-to-back losses, Davidson had rattled off three straight and had won five of the last six.
Last Meeting
Sam Payne went a combined 5-for-7 with four RBI and Ian Horkley pitched six solid innings in the nightcap of the second game as Davidson scored 7-6 and 4-2 wins over Bryant and UNC Asheville on Saturday March 6, 2010 at Wilson Field. Payne led the offense in the first game, batting 3-for-4 and driving in two, including the game-winning run in the eighth inning.
The Wildcats took a 5-2 lead behind four runs on six hits in the fifth. Payne led off with a base hit to left and moved to second on a balk to get into position for James Cerbie, who plated him with a double to left. Gadaire and Weiss followed with base knocks to load the bases with no outs, and Will General drove in a pair with a single up the middle. Andrew Barna hit into a double play, but Coleman Barron drove in the fourth run on an infield single before getting caught stealing to end the scoring.
UNCA put up its own four-run inning in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Danny Baatz led off with a home run down the left field line, and Zinman (sacrifice fly), Jonny Eaker (single) and Jordan Lurie (single) each drove in a run.
Davidson got the score knotted up in the sixth as Tommy Piacenza drew a leadoff walk, was sacrificed to second by Michael Zeblo and scored on Payne's RBI-single. The Wildcats then took a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth as Barron took a leadoff walk, was sacrificed over by Piacenza, bumped to third by a wild pitch and sacrificed on a hit by Payne.
Matt Sliwiak was credited with the win after he shut down the Bulldogs in the final two innings on one hit, one walk and a strikeout.
About the Wildcats
The Wildcats are seventh in the SoCon standings behind Furman (13-15, 6-5) and ahead of Appalachian State (15-13, 4-8) and The Citadel (10-18, 5-10).
Gadaire (fourth, .404) and freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (sixth, .380), who leads the league with 12 doubles and ranks ninth with 38 hits, continue to rank among league leaders in batting average. The pair is also ranked in slugging percentage (sixth, .618; 14th, .530) and on-base percentage (eighth, .460; 10th, .457), respectively. Weiss has the sixth-best on-base percentage in the league (.479) and ranks third with 21 walks. Zeblo has taken 18 free passes, sixth best in the SoCon.
Senior RHP Mike Frongello continues to rank second in the league with a 1.73 ERA, and junior LHP Chris Lamb, who climbed to second with 54 strikeouts and just three behind league leader Lex Rutledge, is 14th with a 3.13 ERA. The duo is ranked ninth (41.2) and third (46.0) in innings pitched, respectively, while Frongello has the eighth-best opposing batting average (.242). Frongello (eighth, 4) and senior RHP Andy Bass (10th, 3) are also ranked in saves, while Frongello continues to lead the league with 18 appearances and is third in games finished (11). Horkley has given up only five walks, third best in the league this year.
About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville is eighth in the Big South standings behind a 10-17 overall record, one of three teams with a 4-5 league mark. The Bulldogs are coming off a 2-1 series loss at Charleston Southern this weekend (9-2, 0-6, 5-7) after splitting midweek decisions at N.C. A&T (W, 14-8) and Tennessee (L, 6-14) a week ago. Asheville defeated then-ranked No. 29 Coastal Carolina 7-6 in 12 innings to win the series, 2-1, at its own Greenwood Field the previous weekend. The Bulldogs' only other series victory is a three-game sweep of Murray State to begin the season. Asheville has been swept by Campbell, Charlotte and Eastern Kentucky, and lost two of three to Gardner-Webb. In addition to midweek losses against ETSU (L, 5-12) and Georgia State (L, 1-7), the Bulldogs have faced three Southern Conference opponents: shutting out UNCG (3-0) on Feb. 22, beating Western Carolina (6-2) on March 16 and most recently, losing to Appalachian State (5-9) on March 22.
As a team, the Bulldogs are ninth in both average (.277) and fielding (.952) and rank last with a team ERA of 6.64. Robert McIntosh ranks sixth in the league with a .381 average and ninth behind a .458 on-base percentage, to go along with seven doubles, a triple and eight RBI. Danny Baatz ranks sixth with 10 stolen bases, and Ian Graham has drawn 18 walks, eighth best. Ryan Dull is tied for sixth with 39 strikeouts and is one of nine pitchers in the league to have thrown a complete game this season.
Last Time Out
The Wildcats are coming off a 2-2 week, including a 4-2 win over NC Central Tuesday night and a 2-1 SoCon series loss at Samford over the weekend.
Davidson used a three-run sixth inning to reclaim the lead, and Frongello tossed the final two shutout innings for his fourth save of the season in the 4-2 win over NC Central Tuesday night at Wilson Field.
Gadaire and junior catcher Seth Freeman each hit a two-run home run, the first for a lead and the second a tie, but the Samford Bulldogs added four runs over the final two innings to secure the 8-5 win in the opening game of the SoCon series Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Stadium. Gadaire's (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) two-run home run in the fourth gave Davidson a 2-1 lead, but Samford retook the lead with three runs in the sixth. Freeman's (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) first home run of the season tied the score at 4-4 in the seventh, and after Samford answered with two runs in the bottom, Barna (1-for-4, RBI) plated Brandt (2-for-5) to cut Samford's lead to just a run in the eighth. But Samford closer Andrew Jones stranded the tying and winning runs, struck out three and held Davidson scoreless over the final 1 1/3 to pick up his sixth save of the season.
The Wildcats used a six-run third inning to defeat the Bulldogs, 6-4, and even the SoCon series to a game apiece, Saturday afternoon. Samford got on the scoreboard first with a lone run in the second, but Davidson busted the game open with six runs in the third to chase Rutledge. The Bulldogs steadily chipped away at Davidson's lead, adding a pair of runs in the sixth and another in the eighth, but the senior pitching staff of Horkley, Frongello and Bass held the potent Samford lineup in check, and the Wildcat defense turned two inning-ending double plays to ensure the early lead held up.
Davidson got its lone scoring on Gadaire's two-out, solo home run in the first, but the Bulldogs answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and led the rest of the way in rubber match, for the 4-1 win and SoCon series victory Sunday. After Gadaire's solo home run, Samford answered with two scores on four hits in the bottom of the inning and added a lone score in both the fourth and fifth, en route to the 4-1 victory for the series win over Davidson. Austin Miller hit a solo home run for Samford in the fourth, and the Bulldogs added their final score on a sacrifice fly by Phillip Ervin in the fifth.
