GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Davidson women's soccer team opened their 2011 Southern Conference slate of games on the road Friday night and suffered a 3-0 defeat to Furman at Stone Soccer Stadium.
This was the third time in the last four years the Wildcats (2-5-2, 0-1 SoCon) had opened league play on the road. It was also the second year in a row they opened up against Furman (6-4, 1-0 SoCon), whom they tied last year 2-2 at Alumni Stadium.
Furman has now won six of its last seven games.
The Wildcats kept the game close until the 40th minute of the first half when they found themselves down 1-0 after Furman's Hannah Stanifer headed in a pass from India Robinson.
Then less than a minute and a half into the start of the second period, Furman tacked on its second goal for a 2-0 lead. Rachel Shelnutt knocked in her fourth goal of season for the Paladins off an assist from Ellen Moore.
Rachel Stelter (The Woodlands, Texas) had back-to-back corner kick tries in the 60th and 61st minute, with Julia Singley (Morganton, N.C.) getting a header shot off, but Davidson was not able to punch one through in its two tries.
Davidson finished with eight shots, but put just two on goal, while Furman closed with 19 shots overall.
The final goal for Furman was put in by Martha Hall, who gathered in a loose ball in the box and took a shot to the left side.
Freshman Rachel Locke (Carlsbad, Calif.) made her third straight start between the pipes, registering five saves. She entered play with the second-best goals against average in the SoCon (0.66).
Davidson finishes out the weekend with a trip to Spartanburg, S.C. to face Wofford on Sunday at 2 p.m.
