Atabek, Menden Honored as ‘Cats take Fifth at SoCon Championships

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – A pair of Wildcats finished inside the top-20 to lead the women's cross country team to a fifth place finish at the 2012 Southern Conference Championships, hosted by The Citadel at Laurel Hill on Saturday morning.
The Wildcats scored 132 points with a team average of 18:21.54 in taking home fifth place, moving up three spots from last season's eighth-place ranking. Appalachian State took home the team championship with 64 points, followed by Elon in second with 68 and Samford in third with 97. Furman finished just ahead of the 'Cats with 118 points to round out the top five.
Samford's Lauren D'Alessio earned Runner of the Year honors with her first place finish in a time of 16:57.65. Appalachian State coach Mike Curcio received Coach of the Year honors, while Samford's Rachel Roberts was named Freshman of the Year after taking second in a time of 17:19.32.
Natalie Atabek and Presley Parkes took 13th and 17th place, respectively, to lead the squad. Atabek paced the 'Cats with a time of 18:01.52, earning All-SoCon Second Team honors for her efforts. Parkes crossed the line in 18:09.68.
Also earning honors was Olivia Menden, who finished 37th overall for a spot on the SoCon's All-Freshman team.
In 29th place was Erin Osment, clocking in at 18:26.56. In addition to Menden, she was followed by Manya Swick in 38th place and Brigid Behrens in 40th. Swick finished in a time of 18:35.41, while Behrens ran an 18:37.58.
Finishing in 19:03.26 was Mary Dombrowski, who took 53rd place and was followed by teammate Sarah Paddon. Paddon ran a 19:23.69 to cross the line 60th overall. Annamarie Armstead was close behind in 64th place, finishing in 19:29.10.
Davidson will next compete at the 2012 NCAA Southeast Regional at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, Nov. 11.
