Wildcats Host Jim Causey Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson men's tennis team returned to the hard courts for the first time since Sept. 17 by hosting the Jim Causey Invitational with the first day being played on Friday at the Convington Tennis Courts.
Along with host Davidson, Southern Conference-foe Appalachian State, cross-county rival Charlotte and Big South opponent Campbell were also part of the field. The first day featured eight flights of singles and four flights of doubles.
Robert Lightbourn had a strong first-day showing by winning his singles match and picking up a pair of doubles wins. The junior netted a 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 win over Campbell at No. 4 singles. He teamed up with two different partners at the No. 4 doubles flight, scoring an 8-7 win vs. Charlotte with Daniel Reitten and then earned an impressive 8-2 victory with freshman Alex Howard.
Howard, playing in his first collegiate Fall event, cruised to an easy 6-1, 6-1 singles win at No. 6 over his opponent from Campbell. He added another doubles triumph with Robert Irigoyen Berlanga at No. 4, scoring an 8-7 decision over a pair from Charlotte.
Irigoyen Berlanga joined Lightbourn and Howard in the singles column with a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 8 singles. The sophomore teamed up with fellow classmate Reitten to win an 8-6 decision at No. 4 doubles over Appalachian State.
Also scoring a singles win was Connor Evins at the No. 5 flight, netting a 6-4, 6-2 straight set win over Campbell. Evins is coming off a sophomore season that saw him go 10-6 in singles play. He also teamed up with Ethan Kallick at No. 3 doubles flight for an 8-2 win over the Mountaineers.
Kallick dropped a super tiebreaker to Campbell in his lone singles match on the day, 5-7, 6-2, 10-6.
Seniors Joe Schafer and Chris Mark dropped their singles matches to Campbell, but regrouped with doubles wins vs. ASU. Schafer and Nicky Kunz picked up an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Mark and Kevin Moore scored an 8-6 win at No. 2. They lost a hard-fought 9-8 match to Charlotte's No. 2 doubles team, while Schafer and Kunz also lost at No. 1 to the 49ers, 8-5.
