GREENSBORO, N.C. – The men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened up the 2012-13 season on Friday by competing in the first day of events at the All-North Carolina Invitational, hosted by N.C. State at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Drew Onken took home a win and Dylan Ludwick also picked up a top 10 finish to highlight the action on the men's squad who sit fourth with 269.5 points through the first session. The women's team picked up a pair of top-10 relay finishes and is currently sixth with 232.5 points.
Host N.C. State currently leads the women's side with 469 points, while East Carolina sits second with 409. The Wolfpack also lead in the men's events with 464 points followed by Duke with 416.5
Meredith Nakano, Jean DeOrnellas and Caroline Vrana teamed with freshman Lauren Malachowski for touch fifth overall out of more than 30 teams in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The quartet finished with a time of 1:38.65. The 400-medley relay team also had a solid swim, taking tenth overall with a 4:03.52. The men's 200 free relay of Onken, Quinn Waggoner, Wills Cooper and Brandon Kegley clocked in at 1:25.78 for a seventh place finish. The men's medley relay finished eighth in a time of 3:31.58.
Freshmen Jessica Miller and Angie Healy were the 'Cats top finishers in the 500-yard freestyle as they took 15th and 18th, respectively, in their collegiate debuts. Miller touched the pads in 5:15.06, while Healy swam a 5:19.08. Ludwick took sixth in the men's event, swimming a 4:40.41 while Ben Stewart-Bates was 12th in at time of 4:48.64.
Onken won the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 1:53.27. Freshman Grant Smith finished 13th in the event, swimming a 1:58.98 in his first collegiate event. Nakano took 16th in the women's 200 IM, finishing in 2:12.33.
Malachowski swam to a 12th place finish in her first individual event, the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 24.82. Cooper took 10th in the men's event, swimming a 21.39.
The 'Cats will return to the pool on Saturday for the second and third sessions of the meet at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.
