DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior goalie Jessica Melby (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was honored with the season's first National Lacrosse Conference's Defender of the Week award as announced today by the NLC.
Melby, who started all 18 games a year ago, opened the season with 14 saves in the Wildcats first contest of the year at American last Saturday, Feb. 18. The junior stopped 14 of American's 33 total shots for a 53.8 goalie save percentage, and added a groundball.
The 14 saves were two off her career-high she set last year in the semifinals of the NLC Tournament against Jacksonville.
The junior netminder is coming off a sophomore campaign that saw her stop 131 shots, pick up 29 groundballs and cause seven turnovers, all career bests. She was honored with the team's Most Improved Award.
This week's NLC Offensive Player of the Week was Christine Dougherty of High Point. She led the Panthers to an 11-10 victory over Navy with four points (three goals, one assist) and scored the game-winner with 4:20 remaining. She also managed to secure a groundball, a caused turnover, and a draw control to start this season's campaign.
The NLC Newcomer of the Week also came from High Point in goalie Julia Burns. The freshman came in off the bench just before halftime with the Panthers trailing 7-4 to Navy and held the Mids to just three more goals the rest of the game. She faced eight shots and picked up five crucial saves, with two of them coming in the final two minutes to help preserve the Panthers' 11-10 victory.
Davidson gears up for its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they host Navy at 12 p.m. at Richardson Stadium.
