SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Southern Conference announced today that Davidson junior forward Jake Cohen has been name the Player of the Year in a vote by the league's Sports Media Association.

The news comes a day after the SoCon coaches tabbed Cohen's teammate, sophomore De'Mon Brooks, the Player of the Year in their poll. While the media association (began voting in 1951-52) and the coaches (began voting in 1989-90) have differed on their selections over the years, it's the first time two players from the same team have split the honor.

The media tabbed Brooks first-team all-league along with Cohen, and junior guard Nik Cochran earned third-team all-league accolades.

Cohen is the seventh Davidson player to be named SoCon Player of the Year, along with Brooks (2012-coaches), Stephen Curry (2008-09-both), Brendan Winters (2005-both), Mike Maloy (1969-70-media), Dick Snyder (1966-media) and Fred Hetzel (1963-65-media).

Cohen ranks 10th in the league in scoring (13.9 ppg), 11th in rebounding (6.0 rpg), 12th in field goal percentage (.477), second in free-throw shooting (.878) and leads the league in blocked shots (1.5 bpg). He was a three-time SoCon Player of the Week selection and was named SoCon Player of the Month in January after recording five consecutive games with 20-plus points. He scored a career-high 29 points against both Georgia Southern and College of Charleston.

Brooks ranks fourth in the league in scoring with 15.8 points per game and ninth in rebounding with 6.3 rebounds per contest. He also ranks sixth in the league in field goal percentage (.533), and he is one of just three players to rank in the top-10 of all three categories. Davidson's leading scorer and rebounder this season, he has scored at least 20 points in nine games this year, including a season high of 26 at The Citadel Feb. 9.

Cochran is averaging 11.1 points, 3.6 assists and 2.9 rebounds a contest. He ranks first in the SoCon in free-throw percentage (.884), third in assist to turnover ratio (+2.0) and sixth in assists. Cochran was named SoCon Player of the Week Dec. 20, after netting 21 points in an 80-74 win over then 12th-ranked Kansas.

The 22-7 Wildcats will meet the winner of Samford and Furman in the quarterfinal round of the SoCon Tournament Saturday at 6 p.m. in the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C. The game will be televised live on ESPN3.
