Box Score
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston secured the series sweep over Davidson as three pitchers combined to hold the Wildcats scoreless for a 6-0 Cougar victory in Southern Conference baseball action at Patriots Point.
RHP Matt Pegler (5-0) held Davidson (8-13, 2-7 SoCon) to five hits and struck out three in five innings to earn the win for College of Charleston (18-6, 10-2 SoCon).
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead with back-to-back, two-out, RBI-singles in the first inning by left fielder Brandon Murray (2-for-2, 2 RBI, 2BB) and third baseman Rob Harding (2-for-4, RBI). CofC added another run in the second inning on an RBI-groundout by shortstop Bradley Goodson (2-for-5, RBI) following a triple by catcher Jimmy Holton (1-for-3).
Davidson had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the fifth inning, but Pegler induced three consecutive pop outs to keep the 'Cats off the scoreboard. Senior centerfielder Drew Gadaire (1-for-4) doubled in the sixth inning and junior third baseman Andrew Barna followed with what appeared to be a home run to left field, but a strong wind blowing in from left kept the ball in the park.
Gadaire's hit extended his reached base streak to 27 games and his hitting streak to eight games.
A single by Murray drove in another Cougar run in the bottom of the fifth inning and a two-run home run by Marty Gantt (1-for-3) over the left field wall in the sixth inning capped the scoring. RHP Dre Watts and RHP Kyle Owings pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, for CofC and preserved the shutout.
RHP Danny Mooney (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out three, in 4.1 innings of work.
Davidson will host Tuesday at Wilson Field with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
