CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Davidson men's tennis team capped off a busy week, and their final road match, with a strong 4-3 win at Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference play at Baylor School Courts.
Playing its third match of the week, the Wildcats (7-11, 3-5 SoCon) regrouped after dropping the doubles point to take four of the six singles matches to halt a three-match skid. The road win was their only one this year. Davidson had also played Furman and Samford during the week.
Chattanooga fell to 13-6 overall and 4-4 in SoCon play.
The No. 1 duo of Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) won their 10th match together with an 8-4 triumph, but the Mocs were able to take 8-6 and 8-4 decisions at the other two spots for the team point.
Gee led the way in singles play as the senior, playing his fourth three-set match in the past five matches, tallied a 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 win at No. 4. It was his third three-set win of the season as he improved to 7-11 and 5-3 in SoCon play.
Freshman Nicky Kunz (Hilton Head, S.C.) also went to a three-setter at No. 3, coming out victorious. The freshman took the first set, 6-1, but fell 6-2 in set two, to force the last set. Kunz then went the distance, prevailing 7-1 in a tie-breaker to earn his 11th win of the year. Of those 11 wins, five have come in three-set matches.
Robert Lightbourn (Nassau, Bahamas) and Connor Evins (Greenville, S.C.) sealed up the win for the Wildcats with victorious at No. 5 and 6 singles positions, respectively. Lightbourn got back to his winning ways after dropping his previous two with a solid 6-4, 6-4 decision over Jackson Tresnan. The sophomore registered his ninth win of the year, all coming at No. 5.
Fellow classmate Evins won his eighth match in the past 10 with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Stephan Crofford. He moved one win away from becoming the second Wildcat to reach 10 wins this year and ran his league mark to 6-2.
Davidson closes out its regular season with SoCon matches against Wofford (Apr. 11, 3 p.m.) and College of Charleston (Apr. 15, 1 p.m.) at home.
