DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) closed out his final home match as a Wildcat with a win, but it was not enough to help the Davidson men's tennis team overcome a 5-2 defeat in their matchup against College of Charleston in both team's final regular season match on Sunday afternoon at the Covington Tennis Courts in Southern Conference play.
The Wildcats (7-13, 3-7 SoCon) earned the ninth seed for the upcoming SoCon Tournament, while CofC (15-4, 9-1 SoCon) won its eighth match in the last nine overall and picked up the top seed for the tournament by way of the tie-breaker vs. Samford.
Doubles saw three fairly close matches, but CofC was able to take two of the three spots for the team point. The No. 1 team of Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Gee gave 84th ranked Kyle Parker and Mickael Trintignac all they could handle, scoring six games but fell 8-6.
The team of Ethan Kallick (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Kevin Moore (Overland Park, Kan.) won their second on the season as a double team with an 8-4 decision at No. 3.
Gee gave the Wildcats one of their two team points when he picked up a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to close out the regular season with an 8-12 record in singles, getting seven of those wins at the No. 4 spot. The senior was 6-4 in league matches, giving him 23 wins for his career.
Junior Schafer earned the other team point when he won a 10-8 super tie-breaker in the third set. With the team match having been decided, Schafer and Trintignac played out a super tie-breaker after the pair had split their first two sets. Schafer won 7-6 in the first set, but dropped a 6-2 decision in the second set.
Nicky Kunz (Hilton Head, S.C.) tried to cap off his solid freshman campaign with anothe win, but fell short in a three-setter. He opened his match at No. 3 with a strong 6-1 win, but then fell 6-1 and 6-2 in the next two sets. Kunz enters the league tournament with a 12-8 mark in singles action.
Davidson will play eighth-seeded Chattanooga, April 19, at 9 a.m. The 'Cats picked up a 4-3 decision on the road, April 1, in the teams only matchup during the season.
