DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Nicky Kunz (Hilton Head, S.C.) was honored for his outstanding first year with a spot on the All-Southern Conference Freshman Team as announced today with the postseason awards given out by the league office.

Kunz becomes the second Wildcat to garner all-freshman honors, joining Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) who was named to the team in 2010.

Splitting time between the No. 2-4 singles positions, Kunz led the Wildcats with 12 wins, finishing 12-8 overall. He was one of three players to reach the 10-win plateau on the season and joined Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Robert Lightbourn (Hassau, Bahamas) with 6-4 records vs. the league. Kunz picked up half of his wins at No. 3, going 6-3 there.

After opening his collegiate career with a pair of tough defeats to Gardner-Webb and South Carolina, Kunz rattled off a season-best five-match win streak, including capturing three three-set affairs against Wingate, Campbell and Charlotte. His win against Campbell was the deciding match point in a 4-3 victory.

Kunz heads into the conference tournament, starting Thursday, April 19, having won three of his last four matches to close out the regular season. The freshman added three wins in doubles action during the season, playing mainly at No. 2.

UNCG's Orcun Seyrek was named the SoCon Player of the Year for the second time in his career. He was also the league's top player in 2009 as a freshman. Stefan Fortmann of Elon was named the conference's Freshman of the Year, while Appalachian State's Alain Humblet earned the league's Don Bunch/Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award. College of Charleston, which had the top record in the league, was coached by Jay Bruner who was named Coach of the Year.

Davidson gears up the SoCon Tournament, April 19-22, in Charleston, S.C. Seeded ninth, the Wildcats will face eighth-seeded Chattanooga to open the tournament at 9 a.m. Thursday the 19th.
