DAVIDSON, N.C. – For the second year in a row, Davidson Women's Lacrosse is dedicating its Friday, April 20, game vs. Longwood to her and the One Love Foundation as announced today by head coach Kim Wayne and the team.
Former Davidson assistant coach, Blair Weymouth, a teammate of Yeardley at Virginia, began the tradition last year when she wanted to honor Yeardley. Blair wrote in an email last year to the parents of the Davidson team, “For those of you who don't know Yeardley, she was truly one-of-a-kind; the nicest, most loving person whose kind heart and character will never be forgotten.”
The entire Wildcat team and coaching staff will wear One Love t-shirts as they warm up for the game on Friday. They will sell One Love items during the game and 100% of the profits will benefit the One Love Foundation.
The team, who is captained by seniors Erin Keitel and Jenna Mugele, along with Alanna Parker, have close connections to the family and the foundation. Mugele is a neighbor of the Love family, while junior Jessica Palfrey played lacrosse in New York for Yeardley's cousin Sharon Robinson, who is involved in the One Love Foundation.
The One Love Foundation is currently in collaboration with internationally known Relationship Violence (RV) experts at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health and School of Nursing to address, educate, empower and combat the growing issue of RV. The One Love Foundation looks to become a leading voice against Relationship Violence, which affects one female every nine seconds in the United States.
To date, the foundation has assisted in the establishment of scholarships at the University of Virginia and Notre Dame Preparatory School in Baltimore (NDP), assisted in the development and implementation of a new synthetic turf field at NDP for 2012, supported inner city lacrosse programs in Baltimore and annually awards The Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award recognizing the accomplishments of a student-athlete who helps her/his team achieve success in ways that may not be measured in statistics.
The foundation is also pleased to announce a new way to support the One Love Foundation. You can make a $10.00 donation to the One Love Foundation via the United Way of Central Maryland anytime by simply texting Love to 27722 from your mobile phone, and verifying the donation by replying YES to the confirmation text. Your donation will show up on your next cell phone bill. Standard text messaging rates apply.
