Davidson Men's Track and Field in Sixth Place, Women in Search of First Points After Day One of SoCon Championships

CULLOWHEE, N.C. — The Davidson men's and women's track and field teams opened up their first day at the Southern Conference Championships as the men earned 14 points to put them in sixth place of the two-day championships held on the campus of Western Carolina.
After six events, both the Appalachain State men and women led the championships with 60 and 61 points respectively. The Davidson women did not record a point on the first day.
For the Wildcat men, Wes Reynolds, Ian Tupper and Stewart Dalton all scored points on the first day. Reynolds had a fourth place showing in the 10,000 Meter run when he crossed the finish line with a time of 31.57.86. He earned five points for Davidson.
Tupper had a fifth place time in the 3,000 Steeplechase when he earned a time of 9:24.06. Rounding out the scorers on the day was Dalton, who jumped to 6.77 meters in the long jump, which was good enough for sixth place.
Also jumping in the event was freshman David Hutchens as he had a jump of 5.41 meters to place 19th overall.
Lee Dorsey competed in the 200 Meter dash and had a time of 23:32 for 16th place.
Qualifying for the finals tomorrow was Andrew Lantz in the 800 Meter. The sophomroe had the top qualifying time at 1:52.46 for first place. Four other Wildcats raced in the event, but were not able to move onto the finals. Weshley Laytham had the best showing of the four with a 10th place showing on a time of 1:5.37.
In the 110 Meter Hurdles, Pierce DeRico finished eighth on a time of 15:13 to reach the finals tomorrow as well.
Taylor Martin had the best time for the men on in the 400 Meter prelims, getting ninth place with a time of 49.67, but it was not enough to reach the finals on Sunday.
The women did not score any points on their first day at the championships. In the 10,000 Meter run, Erin Osment led a trio of Wildcats with an 11th place showing on a time of 38:24.98. Manya Swick (12th) and Abbey Thibeault (19th) also raced, getting times of 28:45.27 and 43:09.24.
In the 100 Meter prelims, Gracie Gordon finished 16thin with a time of 13.50.
The 200 Meter prelims saw Mackenzie Hicks cross the finish line on a time of 28:26 for 23rd place. Hicks also raced in the 400 Meter and was 19th overall with a time of 1:04.16.
Mary Grace Watt and Jane Gay competed in the 800 Meter run and were 23rd and 24th, respectively. Watt crossed the line in 2:22.45, while Gay was right behind the freshman at 2:23.93.
Claire Nasiby was ninth in the 3,000 Steeplechase, getting a time of 12:21.47.
In the field events, Lexie Winograd, Molly Marshall and Mary Grace Gordon competed. Winograd and Marshall were in the Pole Vault, but did not record a height, while Gordon was 11th on a jump of 5.21 meters.
Both teams wrap up the league championship Sunday, April 22, on the campus of Western Carolina.
