DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson volleyball coach Chris Willis announced today that former South Mecklenburg High School head coach and Queens University assistant coach Emily Carrara will join his staff as an assistant coach.
Carrara spent the last two years as an assistant coach at Queens University, where she served as the recruiting coordinator and volleyball strength and conditioning coach in addition to her duties with on-court training and personnel development. The Royals logged a school record 23 wins against nine losses in 2011 and made their first appearance in the Conference Carolinas Championship game.
“Emily is an outstanding young coach who will bring great energy to Davidson volleyball,” said Willis. “Her connection to the club programs and infectious personality are going to help us in the arena of recruiting. Also, her passion for the sport will help drive our program to higher levels. In this time of transition, I couldn't have asked for a better fit.”
Carrara is a member of the coaching staff for the Carolinas Juniors Volleyball Club, the premiere volleyball club in the Charlotte area. She serves as the head coach for the club's traveling 16's team as well as a coach for the club's non-traveling program. She joined Queens after spending the 2009 season as the head coach at South Mecklenburg High School.
Carrara was a three-year captain at Winthrop University and led the Eagles to four Big South Championships and NCAA?Tournament appearances. She was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team in 2003 and to the all-conference second team in 2003, 2004 and 2006. She was named to the Big South All-Academic Team and was the Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year during her senior year. She won the American Legion Award and was the Winthrop nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year in 2006.
Carrara earned a bachelor's degree from Winthrop in 2007. She graduated Cum Laude with a 3.68 grade point average, majoring in political science with a minor in both Spanish and social sciences.
Carrara replaces Gretchen Krumdieck, who was named the first head coach at Georgia College in May.
