CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore Becca Fisher (Fredricksburg, Va.) got into the scoring column for the first time in the 2012 campaign with a game-winning header in the second half, sending Davidson to a 1-0 win over cross-county rival Charlotte on Thursday evening at Transamerica Field in women's soccer.
Davidson (2-3-2) pushed its unbeaten streak to three games, while halting Charlotte's (4-3-1) own three-game unbeaten streak. It was the 'Cats first win over the 49ers since a 3-0 triumph in 2006.
Davidson came out pressing the 49ers' defense to start the second half, much like it did at the end of the first half, and it paid dividends thanks to Fisher.
Fisher, the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year a year ago and the 'Cats leading scorer, showed off her offensive skills in the second half when she hooked up with Rachael Newmister (Clover, S.C.) at the 52:52 mark. Newmister sent a cross from the far side of the field after battling back-and-forth with a Charlotte defender. The ball went into the six-yard box, where Fisher raised up and headed in her first strike of the season, placing the ball to the top-left corner for a 1-0 advantage.
The Wildcat defense of Julie Calhoun (Palos Verdes, Calif.), Louise Timboe (Littleton, Colo.), Meg Sanborn (Weston, Conn.) and Rachel Stelter (The Woodlands, Calif.) took care of the rest, smothering the 49ers attack all evening.
Rachel Locke (Carlsbad, Calif.) earned her second shutout in a row, finishing with five saves. Charlotte's Alex Kubrick had six saves.
The first half was played to a 0-0 tie after both teams traded possession of the ball throughout the 45 minutes. Charlotte had a pair of corners, but Davidson's defense did a solid job of halting the two set plays. The 49ers finished with six corners for the game.
The 'Cats stay on the road and travel to William & Mary for a Sunday afternoon contest against the Tribe at 2 p.m.
Game Notes: It's the 'Cats' first win at Charlotte since 2005 and their fourth win overall in the all-time series … last year both teams played to a 1-1 tie at Alumni Stadium … head coach Greg Ashton moved to 10 wins from 100 for his nine-year career at Davidson ... Fisher's game-winner was the fifth of her career.
