DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior forward Sophia Aleksandravicius captured her third career Southern Conference Player of the Month honor as announced today by the league office after averaging a double-double and setting another historical mark in Davidson women's basketball history during the month of January.
It was a memorable month for the senior, who set Davisdon's all-time scoring mark Jan. 15, and took home the league's player of the week honor twice, Jan. 8 and 28. Aleksandravicius guided the Wildcats to an 8-1 record during the month by averaging team bests of 15.6 points and 10.2 rebounds, while shooting 48.7 percent. She added 23 blocks (2.6 per game), 21 assists and 21 steals.
The forward scored in double figures in all but one game and registered five double-doubles during the month. She also clipped the 20-point mark twice during the month, both coming in the final two games when she went off for 21 and 22 points, respectively, in wins vs. Elon and Western Carolina.
In the win vs. Western Carolina, Aleksandravicius scored 18 second-half points, including eight in a 19-9 run to open up the second half, helping the Wildcats erase a nine-point deficit and go on for the win, 65-56. She tied her season-high with 15 rebounds in a 77-62 home win vs. Elon.
During Davidson's 58-45 win at Wofford, Jan. 12, Aleksandravicius scored all 15 of her points in the second half to tie the program's all-time scoring mark. Then at Furman three days later with a baseline jumper in the first half, she broke the mark with her 1,511th and 1,512th career points to surpass Davidson Hall of Famer Jennifer O'Brien.
Aleksandravicius twice was the league's player of the month last year and has four career weekly awards.
On the season, she is averaging team highs of 15 points (5th in the SoCon) and 10 rebounds (tops in SoCon), while leading the conference in blocks with 58 (2.76- 12th in the nation). Aleksandravicius' 11 double-doubles on the season rank 18th in the nation and are tops in the league.
The senior recently just went over 1,000 career rebounds, becoming the first women's player and just the third player ever at Davidson to have over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds for a career, joining men's basketball players Mike Maloy and Fred Hetzel.
Davidson, winners of nine of its past 10 games, wraps up a three-game road trip Saturday, Feb. 9, at Appalachian State.
