DAVIDSON, N.C. – Shortstop Michael Zeblo's home run represented the lone run for Davidson, as Taylor Johnson's 4-for-5 night keyed a 7-1 victory for Furman in Southern Conference baseball action Friday night at Wilson Field.
Furman (14-4, 5-2 SoCon) scored a total of three runs in the third and fourth innings and tallied a run in each of the final four innings, while starting LHP Nate Smith struck out 10 Wildcats in 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits and four walks. RHP Ben Carlson (3) yielded just two hits and struck out three over the final three innings to earn the save.
Centerfielder Forrest Brandt reached base three times for Davidson (6-9, 2-5 SoCon), walking twice and reaching on a base hit, while first baseman Andrew Barna and Zeblo each went 2-for-4.
Johnson tallied an RBI and a run on his three singles and one double. Centerfielder Will Muzika went 2-for-5, homering in the eighth inning and finishing with a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
Back-to-back doubles by Jordan Simpson (1-for-3) and Muzika to lead off the top of the third inning resulted in Furman's first run of the game. Johnson then gave the Paladins a 2-0 lead with an RBI-single later in the inning. Third baseman David Daniels and Brandt drew walks in the bottom half of the frame to load the bases for Davidson following a Chris Dyer (1-for-3, BB) double earlier in the inning, but Smith answered with a pair of strikeouts to get out of trouble.
In the fourth, designated hitter Jarrod Rickman (1-for-2, BB) roped a double to center to drive in third baseman Chris Ohmstede (1-for-4, BB) from first base for a 3-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Simpson gave Furman a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning before Zeblo put Davidson on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame with his first home run of the season. Another sac fly by Alex Abrams (1-for-2, 2 BB, 2 RBI) in the seventh and Muzika's solo home run in the eight gave the Paladins a 6-1 cushion before they added an unearned run in the ninth.
RHP Ryan Lowe (2-2) took the loss for the Wildcats, yielding four runs (three earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out three.
Davidson and Furman will play again Saturday at 2 p.m. at Wilson Field, and then the two teams will travel to Greenville, S.C. to Fluor Field for a game slated to start Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets to Sunday's game range from $7 to $10, and can be purchased by visiting the Fluor Field Box Office, calling (864) 240-4528, or visiting GreenvilleDrive.com.
