DAVIDSON, N.C. – A trip to the state of Florida for just the second time in program history as well as hosting five Southern Conference opponents in their final season in the SoCon, highlight the 2013 schedule for the Wildcat women's soccer team as announced recently by head coach Greg Ashton.
Davidson will play a 10-game non-conference schedule, with the biggest trip to Fort Myers, Fla., to play in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament. The last time the 'Cats visited Florida was in 1995 when they played Central Florida (W, 6-3 OT) and Stetson (W, 4-0). They will also play at ACC-foe Clemson and Winthrop, while hosting East Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Southern Methodist, James Madison and cross-county rival Charlotte.
In addition, Davidson closes out its last year in the SoCon before moving to the Atlantic-10 in 2014 with a 10-game slate. The Wildcats concluded the 2012 campaign with a 5-5-1 league mark and finished 7-10-3 overall. They will be seeking the program's fourth regular season title as well as their fifth tournament title.
The Wildcats, who return 21 letterwinners, open their season at home against ECU and Coastal Carolina, Aug. 23 & 25. This will mark the third straight season they have played ECU after falling 2-1 and 3-0 in the past two meetings. The Pirates went 10-7-3 a year ago and 6-2-3 in Conference-USA. Davidson and Coastal have never met. The 'Cats will look to continue their dominance at home, having gone 46-19-11 over the past eight years at Alumni Stadium.
The trip to Florida follows the pair of home games, as Davidson plays FGCU and Florida Atlantic, Aug. 30 & Sept. 1. The FGCU Green and Blue won their second straight Atlantic Sun title with a 14-4-3 overall record. They played Davidson in 2011, taking a 2-1 win on the road.
The non-conference schedule continues with three of the next five games at home against SMU (Sept. 6), James Madison (Sept. 15) and Charlotte (Sept. 22). The 'Cats will also play on the road at Clemson (Sept. 8) and Winthrop (Sept. 13). They faced the Tigers (6-10-2 in 2012) a year ago at home and earned a 1-1 tie. Davidson last took on SMU (9-8-4 in 2012) during the 2010 season, falling 3-0 in a road contest. It has not faced the Dukes of James Madison since 1991.
The Davidson-Charlotte rivalry dates back to 1994 with the 49ers leading 11-4-2. The 'Cats have earned points in the last two meetings, tying the 49ers 1-1 in 2011 and then earning a 1-0 victory on the road last year.
The final year in SoCon play begins on the road for the Wildcats when they travel to Chattanooga and Samford to finish out the month of September on the 27 & 29. The 'Cats have dominated the series against the Mocs, owning a 17-1-1 record all-time and are winners of nine straight dating back to 2004. Samford, which went 8-1-2 in league play last year, holds a 2-1-3 lead in the series after defeating the Wildcats 2-0 at Alumni Stadium last season.
Davidson returns home for a three-game stretch against Western Carolina, Appalachian State and The Citadel starting in October. The 'Cats will be looking to avenge a 1-0 overtime defeat to ASU, while continuing their strong play against the Catamounts (9-5-1 all-time) and the Bulldogs (11-1 all-time).
The last non-conference game for the Wildcats features a trip to Florence, S.C., to take on Francis Marion, Oct. 13. They are 2-0 in the series against the Patriots, with the last meeting coming in 2009.
The final two home games of the season are against UNCG and Elon, Oct. 18 & 20, before Davidson closes out the regular season and the month of October at Wofford, Furman and Georgia Southern. The Spartans won the SoCon regular season title with a 9-1-1 mark, but fell in the championship game to Southern, 1-0.
Davidson will be looking to avenge a 3-2 quarterfinal defeat to Furman in last year's league tournament. It will also seek to get back on the winning track against the Eagles, who defeated the Wildcats 1-0 in last year's regular season finale. The 'Cats hold an 18-9-1 all-time mark against GSU and are 12-6-1 all-time against Elon.
The SoCon Tournament, an eight-team format with the four higher seeds hosting the first round, begins Nov. 3. The semifinals and championship game will be hosted by Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C., Nov. 8 & 10. Since 1994, the first year the Wildcats were members of the SoCon, they have gone 16-14 in the conference tournament and taken home the championship title four times — 1994, '95, '96 and 2009.
