RICHMOND, Va. — In her inaugural Atlantic 10 media day Tuesday, head coach Michele Savage of the Davidson women's basketball team met with local and national media at the Richmond Marriott.
The day consisted of a luncheon and then a breakout session with all the media as well as the conference. Savage is entering her fifth year at the helm of the Wildcat program as it makes the transition from the Southern Conference to the A-10 this year.
In addition, the league released its preseason rankings and all-conference teams along with an all-defensive squad.
Dayton was again picked as the A-10 preseason favorite, grabbing all 14 first-place votes and 196 total points. It was the second year in a row the Flyers were tabbed as the league's top team after going 14-2 in conference play a year ago and 14-0 in 2013-14 season.
Rounding out the top five was George Washington (173 points), Saint Joseph's (156), St. Bonaventure (153) and Fordham (143). Of those five teams, three of them made the NCAA Tournament (UD, Fordham and Saint Joseph's), while the Colonials and Bonnies earned bids into the Women's National Invitational along with Duquesne and VCU.
Davidson, which officially became members of the A-10 July 1, 2014, were picked to finish 12th ahead of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Leading the way for the Wildcats are two of the top three scorers from a year ago, Dakota Dukes (14.4 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and Hannah Early (13.9 ppg, SoCon-best 41.7 percent from behind the arc). In addition, joining the seven total returners will be three freshmen including local product Saadia Timpton from Myers Park in Charlotte.
The 'Cats get a couple tune up exhibition games at home before starting the season. They will host Catawba, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., before finishing out against Queens, Nov. 8, at 5 p.m. Davidson starts the 2014-15 campaign on the road at former SoCon-foe Furman, Nov. 14.
