CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — In a game that came down to the final seconds, Davidson had the last shot but was unable to convert as it dropped a 59-58 decision to Miami (Ohio) on the final day of the Holiday Inn University Area Cavalier Classic in John Paul Jones Arena Monday afternoon in women's basketball action.
The Wildcats (4-9) were coming off a great win over Virginia the previous night, but could not carry over the momentum against a Miami (3-8) team that came into the game having lost eight of its past nine games.
After Mellissa Giegerich blocked a Redhawk shot with 14 seconds left, Davidson hauled in the loose ball, raced up the court and called a timeout with six seconds left.
Out of the timeout, Miami fouled on the inbounds play, running a second off. The Wildcats then reset and Saadia Timpton gathered in the inbounds pass, drove the lay, and despite what looked like contact by the Redhawks with no call, saw her shot fall short as the final horn sounded giving Miami the win.
Hannah Early and Mackenzie Latt were each named to the all-tournament team for the Wildcats.
Early did her best to try and help the 'Cats to victory, scoring 18 points with 14 of them coming in the second half. The junior finished the tournament averaging 21 points and seven rebounds, while shooting 44.4 percent from long distance.
Latt finished the day with 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting and six rebounds. Alexandra Long added nine points, six rebounds and three steals. The junior guard made it a one-point game (59-58) when she canned a three-pointer in the corner with 42 seconds left.
The Redhawks put a pair in double figures led by Hannah Mccue's 15 points to go with 11 rebounds. Jessica Rupright chipped in 14.
Davidson held Miami without a field goal in the last 4:37 of the game and just four free throws, but they proved to be the difference.
The Wildcats had tied the game up at 38-all on a 13-6 run and 12:15 left in the second half, but the Redhawks answered with six points in an eight-second span to regain the lead at 44-38 and led the rest of the way.
The first half saw Davidson hold a 17-11 lead halfway through as it swished home seven of its first 13 shots. But, foul trouble hit the 'Cats as Early, Dakota Dukes (five points, seven rebounds) and Latt had to sit with two fouls each in the final nine minutes of the half.
Miami kept it close thanks to Mccue, who scored 11 first-half points, including seven in a row that broke up a 19-all tie and gave the Redhawks a 22-19 lead. They would go into halftime up two, 27-25, despite Davidson holding them to 32.1 percent shooting.
Davidson opens the new calendar year with three straight games at home as its starts its first season in Atlantic 10 play. The Wildcats will first host La Salle, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Davidson scored a game-high 28 points in the paint, but gave up 25 points on its 19 turnovers … Early pushed her career game total of scoring in double figures to 41 and has reached the double-digit mark in all 13 games this year … Davidson fell to 27-36 at in-season tournaments since 1992-93 … today's game wrapped up the Wildcats' season-long five-game road trip.
