Davidson Overwhelmed By No. 10 Duke in Lacrosse

DURHAM, N.C. — Nationally-ranked Duke put five players in the books with three goals each and Davidson was unable to overcome two long runs by the Blue Devils in falling on the road 21-2 Thursday evening at Koskinen Stadium in women's lacrosse non-conference action.

Davidson fell to 1-4 on the season and dropped its 12th straight game in the series to No. 10 Duke, which ran its record to 5-3.

The Blue Devils used runs of 9-0 and 10-0 in each half to overwhelm the Wildcats, who held Duke to just a single goal in the first 12 minutes, before it ran off its first run.

The 'Cats tied the score at the 18:12 mark of the first half on Mary Leonard's sixth goal of the year off an assist from freshman Nicole Pettiglio. Duke though answered with its 9-0 run for a 10-1 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Senior Erin Doherty scored the Wildcats' second goal at the 27:49 mark of the second half, her sixth goal of the year. Katherine Rueger, who was the Big South Rookie of the Week this past Monday, earned her fourth assist on the goal.

Duke's Maddy Morrissey, Kerrin Maurer, Taylor Trimble, Kelci Smesko and Katie Trees all scored three goals apiece to pace the offense. Maddy Acton and Brigid Smith chipped in two goals apiece.

Paige Logan led the Davidson defense with a pair of caused turnovers, two groundballs and a draw control. Annie Brockett also had a groundball and picked up two draw controls.

In goal, Katy Boyle finished with nine saves, while the Blue Devils' Kelsey Duryea and Angel Thompson combined for three saves.

Davidson was 9-for-10 on clear attempts and hauled in eight groundballs compared to Duke's 12. The Blue Devils had a 36-6 advantage on shots and earned 18 draw controls, with Davidson pulling in six.

The Wildcats return home now after their four-game road trip to play host to Villanova Sunday, March 16, at 1 p.m.
