DAVIDSON, N.C. — After a strong regular season in her final year, senior Brites Moniz-Soares was honored by the Southern Conference with a spot on the first team in singles as the league announced its women's tennis postseason awards Monday, April 14.
Moniz-Soares becomes the program's 13th player to earn All-SoCon First Team honors dating back to 1993, and the first since Virginia Berry in 2010. It is the senior's second time earning all-league as she was named to the conference's second team in 2012.
As the Wildcats' No. 1 singles player, Moniz-Soares had a solid campaign in 2014. She went a team-best 13-10 in singles and 5-4 in the SoCon. Twice she had three-match winning streaks during the season and eight of her 13 wins came at home. Moniz-Soares' 13 wins were also good for third-most in the league at No. 1 singles.
She teamed with Elaina Cummer at No. 1 doubles for Davidson as the duo went a team-best 11-10, with a 5-4 mark in league matches. Their 11 wins were the most in the SoCon at the top doubles slot. The pair started the year out 6-2, rattling off a couple of three-match winning streaks.
This year saw Moniz-Soares win her 40th career singles match in a straight-set victory at Appalachian State, March 29. She has a 43-41 career record, with 16 of those wins coming in league matches. She also has collected another 35 wins in doubles play during her four years.
Furman swept three of the four individual awards, with Ansley Speaks earning SoCon Player and Freshman of the Year, and Debbie Southern getting named SoCon Coach of the Year. The league's sportsmanship award was given to Audrey Coventry of Wofford.
Moniz-Soares and her Davidson teammates will have one last go-around in the SoCon Tournament starting Wednesday, April 16, at 2 p.m. when they play ninth-seeded Wofford in the first round. The 'Cats move to the Atlantic 10 next year.
