DAVIDSON, N.C. — A new era begins for the Davidson women's soccer team as they start their first season in the Atlantic-10 by playing eight teams as part of their 19-game overall schedule, announced today by head coach Greg Ashton with the release of the 2014 schedule.
Besides an eight-game A-10 schedule, Davidson will also play the likes of Virginia Tech, UAB, Army, Georgia State, William & Mary and North Florida among some of their non-conference opponents. In addition, on the schedule is local regional rival Winthrop and cross-county rival Charlotte, while the 'Cats will face Big South foes Liberty and Coastal Carolina.
"The 2014 season is going to provide some great opportunities to compete against some very talented programs," said Ashton, who is entering his 11th season. "Obviously the game against Virginia Tech, who appeared in the semifinals of the college cup last year, will be a huge challenge for us, and we look forward to it as well as the transition to the Atlantic 10."
The Wildcats are coming off a 6-11-4 season and went 4-5-1 in their final year in the Southern Conference. During their 20-year run in the SoCon, the 'Cats amassed a 116-58-30 record, won three regular season titles and took home the tournament title four times, including in 2009 when the program made its first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
With the return of 17 letterwinners and the addition of nine newcomers, Davidson opens its 2014 campaign with four straight home games. It starts with a pair of weekend games, Aug. 22 & 24, against Winthrop and ACC-foe Virginia Tech. The Eagles went 11-5-3 a year ago, including taking a 2-1 decision at home vs. the Wildcats.
The Hokies are coming off their best season ever in program history with a 19-5-3 record, including a 9-3-1 mark in ACC play. They earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to their first-ever College Cup.
The following weekend Davidson will host and play for the first time in program history UAB and Army, Aug. 29 & 31. The Blazers went 11-7-2 last year, while Army reached the Patriot League Tournament final where it lost in penalty kicks to American to conclude the season at 8-7-4.
Davidson then hits the road for its next three, playing at ECU (Sept. 5), Coastal Carolina (Sept. 7) and Liberty (Sept. 11). The Wildcats dropped a 2-0 season-opening decision to ECU (4-14-1 in 2013) a year ago and are seeking their first win in the all-time series. Davidson earned a scoreless draw against Coastal Carolina in both teams first-ever meeting in 2013. The Chanticleers went 10-8-2 last year, while picking up a 7-4 record in the Big South.
The road swing will finish at Liberty, which is coming off a 16-6-2 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament a year ago. The two teams last faced each other in 2012, with the Flames earning a 1-0 win at Alumni Stadium.
Games at Alumni Stadium against Georgia State and William & Mary follow the road trip. Davidson and Georgia State have played just once, back in 1995. W&M finished 8-2-7 a year ago and are facing Davidson for the third time.
Davidson looks to keep its winning ways going in the cross-county battle with Charlotte, which it plays Sept. 21 in the start of a season-long four-game road trip and begins a stretch of six of its next seven games on the road. Last year the Wildcats won a thriller vs. the 49ers in double-overtime, 1-0, to earn a point for the third straight game. Despite trailing the all-time series (5-11-2), they are 2-0-1 in the last three meetings.
The other three opponents during the trip will be North Florida (Sept. 28), St. Bonaventure (Oct. 3) and Duquesne (Oct. 5). The games at St. Bonaventure and Duquesne begin the A-10 slate for Davidson. The Wildcats have never faced the Bonnies, who went 8-10-1 overall and 4-4 in the league, while they are 1-0-1 against the Dukes, but have not played them since 2000.
The Wildcats lone home game during the seven-game stretch will be against Richmond, Oct. 11. The two schools faced each other in 2009 with the Spiders (6-9-2, 2-5-2 A-10 last year) claiming a 3-2 win in Richmond, Va.
Wrapping up its road contests for the year, Davidson travels to George Washington and VCU, Oct. 17-19. The Colonials are coming off a 7-6-5 season in 2013, while the Rams finished with an even 8-8-3 mark (3-3-2 in A-10). Davidson and GW saw each other in 2011, with Davidson earning a 4-2 come from behind victory on the road.
The final three games of the regular season are at home against A-10 foes St. Louis (Oct. 25), Rhode Island (Oct. 31) and Massachusetts (Nov. 2). Davidson will be facing St. Louis and Rhode Island for just the second time in program history, while squaring off for the first time against UMass. Despite a 6-10-3 record, the Billikens went 5-2-1 in A-10 action. RIU finished just 6-12 overall and 1-7 in league play, while the Minutewomen had a mark of 7-9-4 and 3-3-2 in the A-10. They fell in the conference semifinals to La Salle.
"We look forward to the move to the Atlantic 10 and joining an extremely competitive conference with a number of teams challenging to make the conference tournament," said Ashton. "Only playing an eight-game conference schedule in a league comprising of 14 teams means there is no margin for error and every single result is of massive importance. I think we have a balanced conference schedule, with four of the games on our home field, and we will do everything we can to prepare for our eight A-10 games."
The A-10 Tournament, an eight-team format, will be held in Dayton, Ohio, Nov. 6-9. It will be hosted by the Dayton Flyers, with the quarterfinals, semifinals and final all being held at Dayton's Baujan Field.
