DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson associate head coach Jim Fox has been named the 16th head coach of the Appalachian State men's basketball program, as announced Tuesday afternoon. Fox will be introduced at a 9:30 a.m. press conference Wednesday morning.

"I'm extremely grateful to Chancellor Peacock, Chancellor-Elect Dr. Sheri Noren Everts, the Board of Trustees and Charlie Cobb for the opportunity to lead the Appalachian State men's basketball program," said Fox. "In addition, I'd like to thank Coach McKillop and Davidson College for helping make this dream a reality. Over the past 13 years, I've been very fortunate to be apart of an institution with a rich academic and basketball tradition. I look forward to helping restore as well as build a program that achieves excellence in every regard."

Fox, 40, joined the Davidson coaching staff prior to the 2001-02 season and was promoted to associate head coach in 2012.

Davidson's record during Fox's 13-year tenure was an impressive 288-131 against tough schedules that consistently included games against opponents from the nation's power conferences. The 2008 season saw the Wildcats, led by the sensational Stephen Curry, advance to the NCAA Elite Eight and defeat powerhouses Gonzaga, Georgetown and Wisconsin before losing to eventual national champion Kansas by two points.

Knowing that it must take care of its own neighborhood first, Davidson in this 13-year period went 183-42 against Southern Conference teams and won conference titles six times. In those 13 years, Davidson played in six NCAA tournaments, three postseason NITs, and the CBI.

"Jim was a significant factor in our success and will be a superb addition to the Appalachian State program," commented Davidson head coach Bob McKillop. "He has a clear understanding and respect for what Appalachian State represents after having played against them through the years. I was thoroughly impressed with Charlie Cobb and the search process. Jim is fortunate to work with Charlie. We will miss Jim, but I'm certain he will write a similar story of success for Appalachian State as he did at Davidson."

Fox graduated in 1995 from the State University of New York at Geneseo College, earning his degree in political science. His father retired as a chief U.S. Probation Officer and his mother retired as a school principal at a Catholic elementary school on Long Island. Fox's father also directed a youth basketball program on Long Island, and Jim began coaching in the program when he was still in high school.

What They're Saying About Coach Fox...
"Jim Fox is ready. He's worked his way up the ladder by wearing many different hats in the Davidson program. Coach McKillop does a tremendous job of preparing his assistant coaches to become head coaches. Jim has been very successful as a recruiter, as a teacher, as a game coach, and he's ready for this great opportunity at Appalachian State." -- Matt Matheny, Elon Head Men's Basketball Coach

"Coach Fox is a great leader that knows how to connect with his players both on and off the court. He knows the game and puts the time in to make himself better and will get the most out of each player he coaches. A guy I keep in touch with to this day, because of how much he pushed me on the court, but also genuinely cared about me. Appalachian State is getting a gem." -- Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors

"I'm really happy for Jim. He's a guy that has worked tirelessly to do his part in helping make Davidson what it is today. He's bright and clearly understands what it takes to be successful. App State hit a home run with Jim Fox." -- Brad Stevens, Boston Celtics Head Coach
