DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball schedule for the 2014-15 season was completed today with the announcement by the Atlantic 10 with the league opponent dates for each team.
Davidson, which became an official member of the A-10 on July 1, will face each of the 13 conference opponents during the 16-game league slate that features eight home and eight away games. The Wildcats open league play with a three-game homestand starting January 4 against La Salle.
In addition to their 16-game league schedule, the Wildcats' non-conference schedule has them facing the likes of North Carolina State, Rutgers and Charlotte all on the road, while hosting Pac-12 foe Southern California. They will also take on former SoCon opponent Furman, while playing at Big South foes Gardner-Webb and Winthrop, and hosting High Point.
The Holiday Inn University Area Cavalier Tournament hosted by Virginia also highlights the non-conference slate.
"Our schedule this year is one of the toughest we have had since I have been here," said head coach Michele Savage, who is entering her fifth year. "I feel that our non-conference schedule will challenge our team as well as prepare us for our top-level opponents in the A-10. The A-10 has been amongst the elite conferences for women's basketball and we look forward to a very competitive first year in the league."
The season starts with a pair of exhibitions at home against Catawba, Oct. 30, and Queens, Nov. 8. From there, Davidson tips the regular season off at Furman, Nov. 14, before hosting Southern Cal three days later. USC is coming off the program's first Pac-12 Title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Women of Troy went 22-13 in head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke's first year.
After a one-game road trip to Gardner-Webb, Nov. 20, the 'Cats play host to Mount Saint Mary's and High Point, Nov. 23 & 25. Davidson is riding a six-game win streak in the series against the Runnin' Bulldogs, as both teams have faced each other the last three years.
In their first meeting against Mount St. Mary's (19-14 last year) a year ago on the road, the Wildcats earned an 83-82 triumph. Davidson and High Point have faced each other the last three years as well, with the Panthers having taken two of the three meetings. They went a school-best 22-11 last year and reached the Women's NIT.
Davidson hits the road after its two-game homestand to face Rutgers, Nov. 30. The two teams have played each other the past two seasons, with both contests going to Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a solid year, which saw them go 28-9 overall and win the postseason WNIT.
The non-conference schedule continues with a home game against North Carolina A&T (Dec. 2), before embarking on a five-game road swing to Winthrop (Dec. 13), N.C. State (Dec. 19), Charlotte (Dec. 21) and the UVa Tournament (Dec. 28-29) to close out the calendar year.
The Wolfpack of N.C. State were one of the top teams in the nation last year, exceeding all expectations after being picked to finish 10th in the ACC preseason poll. They went 25-8, reached the NCAA Tournament, scored four wins over top-20 teams and were ranked as high as 10th in the Associated Press poll.
Davidson and cross-county rival Charlotte continue their rivalry, which dates back to 1974 and has the 49ers leading 14-10. Charlotte (15-16), another postseason team the 'Cats will face this year, reached the WNIT last year, its 12th straight postseason appearance.
Closing out their non-conference games, Dec. 28-29, the Wildcats will play in the Virginia holiday tournament. It is the first in-season tournament Davidson has played since 2010-11 at the UTSA Thanksgiving Tournament. The 'Cats will face host Virginia, Dec. 28, at 2:30, in the first game, and then play Miami (Ohio) on the 29th at 4:30 p.m.
The Wildcats' A-10 slate of games starts in January when it plays host to La Salle on the 4th. They will also host Dayton (Jan. 7) and Rhode Island (Jan. 11) during their three-game homestand to open their conference schedule.
Overall, Davidson will play home and home series with Fordham, Saint Louis and VCU, while also hosting Richmond and Saint Joseph's.
The A-10 had a very successful campaign a year ago. Fordham beat top-seeded Dayton 63-51 to win the 2014 A-10 title. The Rams were joined in the 2014 NCAA Tournament by UD and Saint Joseph's. The Hawks knocked off Georgia in first-round play, before falling to eventual National Champion UConn in round two. Duquesne, George Washington, St. Bonaventure and VCU were all selected to take part in the 2014 WNIT, with GW advancing to the third round of play.
The Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship will be played in Richmond, Va., at the Richmond Coliseum, March 4-8. The first three rounds will be broadcast on the A-10 Network, while the semifinals can be seen on the CBS Sports Network. The Championship game will be on ESPNU at 1 p.m., March 8.
