DAVIDSON, N.C. — Head coach Kim Wayne and the Davidson women's lacrosse team recently picked their team captains for the 2016 season and the trio of Nicole Pettiglio, Holly Thomas and Emma Sissman were each tabbed captains.
All three players were key contributors during the 2015 campaign, playing in all 16 games, with Pettiglio and Thomas starting every game.
Pacing the offense next year will be Pettiglio and Sissman. They combined 41 of Davidson's 157 goals scored and totaled 48 points. Pettiglio, a rising junior, had a breakout second year. She registered career highs in every offensive and defensive category. The midfielder finished tied for third on the team with 22 goals and added an assist for 23 points. Pettiglio recorded five multi-goal games, including a personal-best four goals in a 13-10 road win at Saint Joseph's. She finished the year scoring seven goals on her last 15 shots.
The Westford, Mass., native, also picked up 23 groundballs (fourth on the team) and 15 draw controls, while forcing the second-most turnovers on the squad with a personal-best 12.
Sissman had a steady junior season after her breakout second year in 2014 that saw her earn All-Big South First Team. The Baltimore, Md., native tallied 19 goals and six assists for 25 points this year. She paced the team with 56 draw controls – fourth-most in the A-10 – to push her career total to 195, tops all-time in program history.
The midfielder registered seven multi-goal games in 2015 to give her 29 for her three-year career. Sissman also picked up 14 multi-draw control games this past season, including a season-best eight in the Wildcats' season-ending 15-7 win over Saint Bonaventure. She now has 45 games for her career with two or more draw controls.
Anchoring the defense next year will be two-year starter Thomas, who was named to the A-10 All-Second Team at the end of the 2015 season. The soon-to-be senior had a personal best junior year, recording career highs in groundballs (33), draw controls (21) and caused turnovers with 21, which was tops on the team. Eleven times Thomas hauled in two or more groundballs in a game, while six times forcing multiple turnovers. She had a career-high four vs. Saint Francis, March 6.
A native of Houston, Texas, Thomas has started the past 35 straight games and seen action in a total of 47 contests overall during her three-year career.
The trio will return along with 17 other letterwinners as the Wildcats will be playing their second year in the Atlantic 10. Davidson went 3-5 in its first year in the league and finished 6-10 overall for the 2015 season.
