DAVIDSON, N.C – Beginning the program's 27th season, the Davidson women's soccer team will host five non-conference opponents, including North Carolina State, and enter their second year in the Atlantic 10 by being the host school for the league championship in November, as the 2015 schedule was recently released by head coach Greg Ashton.
The Wildcats will play a 19-game slate overall, playing nine of those contests outside of the conference. Their biggest road trip will be a visit to Virginia Tech, which two years ago advanced to the College Cup and last year reached the round of 16.
As part of the Atlantic 10 schedule, coming to face the 'Cats at Alumni Stadium will be VCU, Duquesne, George Mason, St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's. Over the last 11 years, Davidson has collected 57 wins at home.
Davidson, which went 5-12-2 a year ago, begins the campaign at home for the fifth straight year when it hosts Albany and former Southern Conference opponent Elon over the weekend of Aug. 21-23. It will be a first time matching up against the Great Danes. The all-time series vs. the Phoenix has the 'Cats owning a 12-8-1 advantage, but they are seeking to halt a two-game losing streak.
Playing just two games over the next two weeks, Aug. 29 & Sept. 6, Davidson will travel to Big South foe Campbell to face the Fighting Camels for the first time since 1998 and just the fifth time overall. The following weekend another former SoCon opponent visits in the Furman Paladins for a Sunday contest. The 'Cats are seeking their first win in the series, which dates back to 1994, since 2009 when it scored a 1-0 shutout victory at home.
A pair of ACC foes follow on the schedule. Davidson goes to Virginia Tech for a Thursday night game, Sept. 10. The Hokies came to Alumni Stadium ranked fifth in the nation a year ago and scored a 4-0 win. It finished the year 16-6 and reached the round of 16 before falling to Penn State.
Sunday, Sept. 13, has the 'Cats hosting N.C. State, which went just 2-15-2 and 0-10 in league play last year. They are seeking their second win in the series that first started in 1992 and is 10 games old.
A two-game road swing has Davidson playing its third member of the SoCon, at Wofford (Sept. 18), and then ending the weekend on Sunday in Atlanta, Ga., against George State (6-10-4 last year). The Panthers and Wildcats played to a scoreless tie last year at Alumni Stadium, while Davidson is riding an 11-game unbeaten streak (7-0-4) vs. the Terriers. The two teams played to a tie in their last meeting in 2013.
Davidson's final non-conference game has it hosting Francis Marion to close out the month of September on the 26th.
A-10 action begins at home the following week, Oct. 1, with a game against VCU. Both teams were facing each other for the first time a year ago as the Rams picked up a 1-0 home win.
Three of the next four league games has the 'Cats hitting the road with contests at La Salle (Oct. 4), Dayton (Oct. 8) and Massachusetts (Oct. 15). Both La Salle and Dayton advanced to the NCAA Tournament after the Explorers won the A-10 regular season title with an 8-0-0 record, while the Flyers captured the league's tournament title.
The lone home game during that stretch is against Duquesne, Oct. 11. The Wildcats dropped a 1-0 double-overtime game last year vs. the Dukes.
Davidson next will host a three-game homestand from Oct. 18-25, facing Geoge Mason, St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's. The Wildcats' first-ever A-10 win came against the Bonnies, while they will be facing the Patriots and the Hawks for the first time in program history.
Closing out the regular season are trips to Fordham (Oct. 29) and Rhode Island (Nov. 1), which went 12-5-2 last year.
This year's Atlantic 10 Tournament, an eight-team format, will be held at Davidson, Nov. 5-8. The Wildcats will be hosting the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game at Alumni Stadium. It's the first time since 2011 they will have hosted a league tournament game and the first time since 2007 hosting the SoCon semifinals and final.
